Ryanair flies from Eindhoven to Budapest from April 2012 on
Yesterday the newspapers and media on the Internet paid many atttention on the news that the ailing airline company Malev was forced to cease all flights to prevent an even greater financial crisis. The news was not unexpected, already for a long time dark clouds were hanging over the future of this company. Thousands of passengers were therefore not able to take their scheduled flight and had to find other solutions.Meanwhile, the airline company Ryanair isued, after a meeting with the Hungarian government and Budapest Airport, a press release in which it indicates to take over several of the activities of Malev. This starts on 17 February 2011 and gradually all 31 new lines of Ryanair will be taken into use.
Ryanair will also station 4 new Boeing 737-800 aircrafts in Budapest and strives to transport each year 2 million people to and from Budapest. Ryanair currently has more than 700 Hungarian pilots and flight attendants in service and organizes on February 7 a job market where employees of the former Malev can apply for a new job. Ultimately this will lead to 2000 jobs at Budapest Airport. But it also undoubtedly will lead to job losses and tougher and more efficient working for the employees who get a job at Ryanair.
According to the same press release, Ryanair already flies from mid February from Brussels Charleroi to Budapest and Eindhoven is scheduled for April. With ticket prices starting at 9.99 euro Ryanair thus directly compete with Wizzair which flies from the same airports for low prices. Weeze airport still remains outside the competition, but Wizzair will not be happy with this direct competitor and it is seen how this fight will go. Because, are there enough passengers for more flights from both Eindhoven en Brussels Charleroi. This because the Wizzair airplanes are not always full. It would not surprise me if Wizzair will put more emphasis on flying from Weeze Airport or already extending the number of flights. Also, more than ever the additional costs must be compared, especially these can make the difference. From Amsterdam, the KLM remains the only company in the Netherlands that flies directly to Budapest, but it is general much more expensive.
So, in the coming months it can be very beneficial for tourists to fly to Budapest. Can, but the the time shal prove it. Szia Budapest soon will make an overview of the rates and charges and conditions of both companies and will publish this overview within a couple of weeks.

June 4-11: The 1st International Sándor Végh stringquartet competition
In Budapest a new classical musicfestival will be held in June and, to all appearances, a very special festival. Between June 4 and June 11 the first International Sándor Végh stringquartet competition will be held to celebrate the hundredth birthday of Sándor Végh.Sándor Végh (1912-1997) was, international seen, one of most welknown and famous artists in the classical music genre. He founded the Végh stringquartet and the Hungarian Trio. After the Second Worldwar he left Hungary and Belonged to the top of the classical music scene. Sándor Végh taught in Düsseldorf and Basel, and was one of the most influential violin teachers at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and also founder and conductor of the Camarata Salzburg Chamber Orchestra.
The competition is organized by the Music Academy, the Végh family, former pupils of Sándor Végh, and the cultural department of the Nemzeti Erőforrás Minisztérium. The competition has four rounds during which music must be performed from a by the jury pre-determined list. It seeks the participation of string quartets of upcoming musical talents, the total age of the members of a quartet on June 1, 2012 may not exceed 128! The jury is represented by members from renowned stringquartets such as the Alan Berg Quartet. A modern festival too because all rounds are broadcast on the Internet via the website of the organization and the audiences have free access to the concerts in the Mupa and Marble Hall of Hungarian Radio. It is the intentention of the organization to organise this competition every three years.
It is a competition that's interesting for every lover of chamber music, and therefore an early notice so that if you love this music genre
and you want to visit Budapest, you know when you need to plan your vacation. The excellent English language website of the organisation provides detailed information about the pieces that will be played, the Sándor Végh Year and much more.

January 31, 2012: Closing of the Gödör Klub
In a freezing cold the simple official closing ceremony of the Gödör Klub was held on January 31, 2012 at the Erszebet tér. A shame! A cold that is characteristic of the climate which currently reigns in Budapest and how the government is dealing with people and culture. The closing ceremony consisted of removing the roof logo accompanied by music and a campfire.Absolutely shocking was how the building looked at the inside .... the day before it still was a vibrant center and full in operation, now it's almost completely empty, all goods which are the property of the owners of the Gödör have been removed, so the new tenant will have a big job to transform the building again into a cultural center. Around the closing ceremony, I has made some pictures which you can view by clicking on the photo or the title. It is hoped that the club soon Gödör Klub soon wil be able to continue their activities on a new location. But again, it a shame how the government has treated the former owners, the deserved to stay for many years at this location. I know that many many people are sad and very, very angry about this.

The Gödör Klub is forced to close: they are crazy!
Last night the first evening was held being a protest against the forced closing of the Gödör Klub and it was busy, at times very crowded. Many artists performedfor free and also tonight from 18.00 hours untill late at night there's music and protest. A sad staff whom not know what and how because the mesage that the Gödör have to close its doors came completely unexpected. On January 17, the current management got a message that they had two weeks time to close the Klub and remove al their things, then a new management would take over the building. There was no tender, it's been against the rules, even contrary to the law, but the current government doesn't care about it they make their own rules and nobody else. The attack came so unexpected that the people at the Gödör were shocked, they were busy as usual with the agenda for February and beyond and tonight the first evening of a talent contest for the Athe Sam Roma festival was planned to be held...Absolutely cru is that the new management has indicated that they have intentions to take over the staff and activities and continue as usual, but why you remove then old management? There's no reason given, no criticism, nothing. And the new owner is the same who operates, on behalf of the government, the Terminal Design, housed in the former international bus station. So you may expect that under the new management in the former Gödör building no more meetings will be held where there is place for criticism on the government. All activities will be "safe" and carefully screened. And after Túzrákter and Sirály, both of whom were also forced to close after the organization of activities where too much criticism was on the government, again a great loss for the city. Who of the staff will gone to work for the new owner is unknown, some are forced because it's not easy to get a new job, others refuse because of the close group and, as I heard, people can kep their job, but they will get a lower salary
Anyway a cultural institution shall disapear and a lot of knowledge is thrown away.. 10 years of working with passion are ended. And, it's still the question if it's possible to continue festivals such as the Athe Sam Roma Festival in June and the same is for al other events which made the Gödör to an unique House of Culturel. I'm a very frequent visitor of the Gödör Klub I will go again tonight, especially for the people working there and I know to support them because they have a very hard time. And they are not the only ones whom are sad and angry. . . .

Fehér Rózsa / Weisse Rose protest
In Budapest, currently a Graffiti Artwork is in the pipeline that screams for attention. Due to the cold and the implications for the paint, this artwork is unfortunately not yet finished . Because it's possible that it quickly is disappeared, already two pictures and the translation of the Hungarian text (thanks to the artists). Names and the location are deliberately not mentioned. The White Rose was a resistance movement in Germany during WWII and was founded by a group of students who are calling for nonviolent resistance against the Nazi regime. The group Included e.g. Hans and Sophie Scholl as well as some professors. During their actions five leaflets were distributed calling for action against the policies of Adolf Hitler. Also slogans were chalked on walls. Unfortunately, several members of the group were arrested in 1943 and hanged. After the death of the resistance heroes a last pamphlet (1,500,000 copies) was dropped over Germany by the RAF.
On the text, along the photograph, translated in English and provide by the artists, you can read: "But, I ask you, if you know that, why do you not bestir yourselves, why do you allow these men who are in power to rob you step by step, openly and in secret, of one domain of your rights after another, until one day nothing, nothing at all will be left but a mechanised state system presided over by criminals and drunks? Is your spirit already so crushed by abuse that you forget it is your right - or rather, your moral duty - to eliminate this system?"
And, beside of it, the artists wrote me: "on the other hand, it's really not our fault if everyone here in Hungary see a connotation in it, and a parallelism with the fascists and our current government". I myself am not tied to any political party and basically apolitical. But, personally I notice too many signs which indicate the development of a society where there is no room for freedom of speech, human rights be abused and anything that's against the sore spot of the government must disappear. The examples are in abound, such as the disappearance of Túzrakter or recently the Gödör Klub, both places where there was room for openly criticizing the government or where anti-government demonstrations were prepared. And also the refuse to give a license to Klub Radio , during their broadcastings there was too much criticism on the government and then you have a huge problem.
Beside it the publishing of pamphlets in which Hungary is portrayed as an "ideal" country with an excellent social and medical system (which is not true in practice), which is a splendid example of propaganda. And that's a pitty because Hungary is a wonderful country to live in with a tremendous future. But that can not on the way policy used by the government and this is the reason Szia Budapest publishes this example of protest. If it's possible to finish the artwork, you wil see the final result with detailed photographs on Budapest Grafiti

The Art Nouveau mosaic triptych designed by A. Dudits
Ea page dedicated to a unique Art Nouveau mosaic triptych in Budapest which can be found high on the facade of the building at the VIII. Nepszinház utca 22. The architect Emil Vidor, the artist: Andor Dudits. Because of the height, the details are not clearly to see, and that's a pitty because the art work is of a great beauty. Szia Budapest shows for the first time on the Internet the whole mosaic triptych in detail. Also a work of art that is decaying and the hope that by publishing the detailed photographs action will be taken to preserve this artwork. If no restoration will take place in a short time, the art work shall be disappeared within a couple of years. And that is a cultural disaster for the city.

Until February 12: Raoul Wallenberg exhibition
On August 4, 2012 it's 100 years ago that the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg was born. This fact was the reason for the Swedish Institute, in cooperation with Hungary, to create a traveling exhibition about the impressive work done by Raoul Wallenberg in Budapest in the second half of 1944. And, due to this heroic deed he saved the lives of tens of thousands of Jews. The title of the exhibition: "Számomra nics más választás - Raoul Wallenberg 1912-2012" (To me there is no choice - Raoul Wallenberg 1912-2012).The exhibition, how symbolically, was officially opened on January 17. Symbolic because Wallenberg was last seen on January 17, 1945. Since that time it's unknown what happened to him, except that he was arrested by the Russians and an official statement by the Russian government declares that he would be deceased in 1947 in a Russian prison. But there's no proof that this is the truth and thus not recognized by the Swedish government.
It has become a beautiful small exhibition which on large canvasses briefly and chronologically describes the life and career of Raoul Wallenberg. Impressive and haunting, a feeling which is enhanced by the somber music that is played at the exhibition and the use of sound effects. An exhibition which is recommended if you stay in Budapest the next weeks or are living in the city.
But also criticism because the text on the canvasses contain a number of historical faults. Just one example: the text written about the period July / August 1944 let the visitor believe that the Jewish population of Budapest was housed in a closed area and wasn't able to retreive foods and drinks. But, this situation took not earlier place than December 1944. Between these dates the Jews were forced to move into 1800 with a Yellow star marked houses located in the whole city. Also the role of the Hungarian regent Miklós Horthy is too much rose-tinted described. For example, it's a fact that Horthy had strong anti-Semitic sentiments, but did not dare to tackle the Jews because they were too important for the Hungarian economy, which would collapse without them. No doubt a deliberate omission, caused by the current political policies. And, in fact a shame, there's not even one word written on the fact that not only Raoul Wallenberg saved the lives of Jews, but that he was working in collaboration with other countries such as Switzerland, on behalf of which country Carl Lutz also rescued the lives of thousands of Jews.
After the exhibition in Budapest it also will be shown in Moscow, Berlin, Tel Aviv, Washington DC, New York and Ottawa / Toronto. In Budapest the exhibition is to visit in the Hungarian National Museum, VIII. Múzeum Körút. 14-16. With the exception of Mondays open on every day from 10.00 to 18.00. Entrance fee
(adults): 1100 HUF.
Note: By clicking on the photo above you'll be directed to the official website of the Swedish government about the Wallenberg eve.

The Hungarian crisis and what worries me
In the newspapers, but also on the Internet, daily is written about the "Orbanisation" of Hungary. Szia Budapest spended on this subject till so far hardly any time, because this website is not aimed at providing current (political) news. That what's going on in Hungary, is a bad development for the country, is beyond dispute, yet ... many of these people speak without having knowledge of the Hungarian national character. You go as an outsider a Hungarian really not tell what he have to do and how. They will listen to the criticism and if there is no other choice, things will be adjusted on points. On Points, and mainly if the flow of money from Brussels will be stopped. Because this money is, to my knowledge, and especially in Budapest, of great financial importance because it's is required to beautify the city in the hope that more tourists will bring a visit to the city. What is underexposed and worries me is that the government attempt to create an image of Hungary as "ideal" country. A little bit North Korea, where, according to the government, no problems are. Living in Budapest, you see more and more signs which emerge to that direction. The brochure "Safety in Hungary" described below is a good example of such propaganda. And the same text as in that folder is also used in the guide that describes the possibilities and discounts of the Budapest Card. And, by this same Budapest Card, the government tries to get the power on what the tourists may see and which highlights he or she should be visit. On this way it will be tried companies such as Hop on Court to take off the wind from the sails because with a Budapest Card, you'll get one or two guided tours for free And during these tours you only will see the sunny side of Budapest, and not for example the very dilapidated and poor VIII, district (but with beautiful buildings). .And the tourist also gets free access to attractions which are time consuming, so it is hardly possible to wander through the city. In the Tourinform offices it's also visible that less brochures are available, it's more regulated than, for instance, a year ago.
But also (and in particular) the problem of the homeless. Always been a problem and till 1.5 years ago you could see dozens of people sleeping in the subway stations. And, there where not so much problems for them, it was more or less allowed and accepted. Then came a change in policy. Posters were hung on in the metro stations with addresses where homeless people could sleep (but there was and is not enough space to give all of them a bed) and the government began, first gently, to remove the homeless out off the subway stations and later also at other places. Today you'll find barely a homeless person who's sleeping in a subway station or elsewhere, because the control is strict and the police checks intensive, also on the street and asking people who see anything neglected, for their identity. Serious (and sufficient) care for these people wasn't and still isn't available and a social program is also missing. In fact, the homeless deliberately driven to locations which the tourists not as fast will visit.... And there cane a law that forbids sleeping on the street with such a large fine which the homeless never are able to pay, so an imprisonment and a criminal record. Very useful if you want to resocialise these people and bring them back into the society.
From the mid 2011 a sort of raids took place in the VIII. district to combat the nuisance made by the homeless and this happened not on a friendly, soft way, despite many protests. Also in 2011 the soup and bread distribution by the Hare Krishna, which already for 20 years took place at the Blaha Lujza tér was forced to move to a location that is much less be visit by the tourist, the row of people became too huge and too notable. But on the second Christmas day, they were back at the old location, and with a row of at least 200 people who were waiting patiently (see photo below). Another example: along one of the railway lines in the city was a real ghetto. Tent camps, self-built houses and a huge waste pollution because the inhabitants of these "houses" didn't clean the neighbourhood. This was daily seen by thousands of train passengers including tourists arriving at the airport and who went by train to the city center. So the government decided to unceremoniously and without a reasonable period for the residents to find a place elsewhere, to remove the location on a very rude way.

The last day there's even more activity to remove all homeless out of sight of the tourists. Again, especially in the VIII. District the police is more present and patrols intensively. And allready for several days day a special police bus is stand-by at the Blaha Lujza tér ready to, as soon as a new victim is found, immediatly to pick up this person and to bring away. Wherever these people go ... no idea. Possible that these people are dumped outside the city limits or the tourist area. Maybe in the prison for several days, but the it won't solve the problem ... and it worries me how the homeless be handled. And allready for several days I see in my neighborhood less and less faces of familiar homeless people. People who often are come into a situation for which they have not chosen and that they be helped even further into the destruction, rather than that there is a good social program for them. Many of these people are not the youngest and do you want them return into a 'normal' social environment, an intensive supervision program will be needed. And that lacks.
It's therefore not surprising that more and more charity shops be opened in Budapest or other partticuliere initiatives are developped to help these people. From the government you don't have to expect anything, they only try to create an ideal situation for tourists who visit Budapest. So that worries me. But, I can not change anything in a positive way, except that anyone who has criticism, for a few days should visit Budapest to see this situation with their own eyes. Go with Julius on a private tour to one of the many tent camps / slums that can be seen in the outskirts of the city, and that number of illegal houses is still growing. From the sidelines yelling is wonderful, but first orient your self on the actual problem. Only when this is recognized, and drastic measures are taken such as shutting down the subsidy tap from Brussels there's a possibility of changes ... Otherwise only a few, less interesting, problems will be solved.

February 2-6: Budapesti Nemzetközi Cirkuszfesztivál with Dutch contribution
From February 2 to 6 the 9th International Circusfestival of Budapest will be held. A festival which is held every two years. More expanded than ever with 30 acts from artists of 17 countries. The festival has a Dutch contribution: Emily and Menno van Dyke will perform their act "Juggling tango". Menno van Dyke started in 2002 his career as a circusartist and has given shows all over the world. On the website of Menno van Dyke you can watch a movie of the act he will be perform in Budapest.During the festival 2 main shows be held, lasting each approx. 3 hours and with exception of February 2 and 3 on which days only one show be held, the days after 2 shows a day be given. The Dutch contribution is part of show "A". Beside these shows, a Hungarian Gala be held on February 4 and on February 6 at the 19.00 hours a Gala Evening starts during which the jury will give awards for the best acts. The program is very interesting and highly recommended if you are a fan of good, special circus acts. The excellent website (in English) of the organisation provide information on the shows, the acts and the ticket prices.

March 16-26: Budapesti Tavasi Fesztivál, but in a leaner edition
Last year, I already expected it, and it has now become reality: the renowned Budapesti Tavasi Fesztivál (the Spring Festival) still shall be held this year but in very leaner edition. The organization gives as reason that because of the financial crisis, major sponsors, including the OTP bank, have ended their sponsorship and that there is less grant received. However, last year showed that the festival for many Hungarians has become too expensive and there was a dramatic number of unsold tickets. Such that on the day of a concert many tickets were sold with 50% discount. This year the fesitval shortened for almost one week and each day there are less concerts than in previous editions. In addition, the festival is disconnected of the Országos Táncháztalálkozó és Kirakodóvásár, the national Táncház Fesztivál.Nevertheless the organization has succeeded to contract several major world stars of (classical) music for the 2012 edition of the festival. One of the highlights is without any doubt the concert that will be given on March 17 by the world famous violinist Maxim Vengerov with the Chamber Orchestra Fransz Liszt . Maxim Vengerow previously performed 2 times during the festival and these concerts are still engraved in my memory and were unparalleled. Other international stars who will give a concert include the Wiener Sängerknaben, Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra, John Malkovich, Chick Corea and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Charles Dutoit as conductor.
And it's more and more become a festival for everyone. Was in former years the focus mainly on classical music, now also other musical genres are more and more integrated into the program, there is for instance also drama, flamenco music, dance and jazz. Also during this festival in the Hungarian folk dance and music lovers be not forgotten. For these fans will be on March 17 the 40th anniversary of the Hungarian Dance House celebrated with a gala evening where, among others, Márta Sebestyen will perform. The website of the organization is also in English, but this one it is less extensive than the Hungarian version and still not complete.

Warning for the Téli Kertem pub!
Téli Kertem on the corner of the Dohány utca and the Kaczinsky utca in the VII. district... I thought a good, reliable pub. Visited for many times and most of the staff is friendly and correct. Food is fairly good and cheap...This I thought till today and then a trick was used, that sometimes still is common in Budapest by some people who think they can mystify the guest. Just as every visit I asked for a white house wine, a glass (2 dec). Price 380 HUF for a glass. When I asked the bill I must pay for a more expensive glass of wine that I didn't ordered. It's only a difference of 320 HUF for a glass, but this kind of tricks don't belong in a good pub. Only after a long discussion I could pay the price for the house wine and they told me that I have to learn Hungarian ... and also that isn't correct..Never hold an extended discussion with a client, he's the guest... Therefore a serious warning for Téli Kertem... the ladies working there are correct, and most of the guys too, but I think the management must take action against members of the staff that mystify guests... I won't visit Téli Kertem anymore till I receive signals that this kind of tricks don't happen again. So, if you are visiting this pub, but please note that you can be scammed!

an entertaining and unnecessary folder
Recently, please include the Tourinform offices find a new folder: "Safety in Hungary". Unlike the title suggests, a German-language brochure (Update: In mid-January in English) that is issued by the police. This leaflet tips to keep your stay in Hungary is not a success. It is a folder where a lot of comments to make. For example, a survey of a number of reliable taxi companies, but it lacks the name of the official taxi (Fotaxi) that transports people from the airport. For the most part the leaflet contains general tips that apply to every major city, as no change in the streets, restaurants do not visit places where the prices are not listed, etc. Perhaps the best information in this leaflet is a picture of the legitimacy of the police. The brochure refers to an English-language website that offers exactly the same information and some "under construction", so there will be list of recommended restaurants and hotels. There is also warned of a number of nightclubs. This information comes from the U.S. Embassy and partly outdated. In fact, the brochure adds nothing in terms of information.
One part of the leaflet is remarkable and entertaining .... the part about beggars. Some text here: "Those were Bettler others osteuropaïschen Ländern aus und nach Ungarn brought sind sehr oft as alte Frau verkleidet, game haben eine oder schwere Körperverletzung Behinderung. Ungarn verfügt über ein und Soziales Ausgezeichnetes Medizinisches System. Solche unmenschlichen Verhältnis konnen sich nicht ereigen ......"
That the social and medical system, Hungary is good, with a large grain of salt to take too many people are truly poor and are not wealthy. The soup and bread distribution of the Hare Krishna on Boxing Day caused a row of at least 200 people were waiting patiently. And the number of homeless is growing. The government tries or to the eye of the tourist to escape by homeless people to the outskirts of town to hunt, but live hundreds of people for many years in the bushes at the edge of the center in homemade shacks or just under a piece of sail stretched between two trees. It has to be careful who you give money, here's some mafia and forced them together largely begged money to donate. The medical care is generally less than the Netherlands. Therefore, pure propaganda ...
For, when the old women in this brochure refers are pure Hungarian and professional beggars. Every morning around 9.30-10.00 hours, this group of women in varying composition through the Nepszinház utca District VIII. the city, gather in a side street near the major hamburger chain, and then discuss who will do what pathetic. The clothes are coordinated and one is well organized. I have seen this many times and the number of women varies from 4 to 6 and at night they go the same way back home .... Day in, day out. So you see an old woman on the street, kneeling or simulating that she can not walk, they run a play and in fact she is perfectly healthy. You can get your money better give an old lady for a few hundred forint sells a bunch of flowers.
