Still a few hours and then... no smoking in bars!
From 0.00 hours there's a total smoking ban in bars, restaurants and so on in Hungary... But, there will not immediately be taken action by the government because there's a transition period of three months during which only warnings will be given. But enforcement of this law is very difficult and partly impracticable. It's very likely that the government during this 3 month will investigate which pubs still allow smoking and give them a fine as soon as the three months are past. Big Brother is watching you in Budapest.Take a pub as Szimpla .. No smoking means that the visitors have to stand outside the building if they want to smoke a cigarette. But there are guards to avoid that there is too much noise on the street.... when you're a night out with friends and smoking a cigarette you don't keep your mouth... So leave that cigarette, or stop with smoking? Nice idea but there still have to flow a lot of blue water in the Danube before this will happen, the current generation is in a large majority used to go out and talk and drink and meanwhile smoking a cigarette.
Or a couple from whom one needs to go out to smoke while the other has to wait because the personal things have to be guarded. Or, how does a pub owner will solve the occuring problems.... at this moment you order a drink and pay afterwards, but when people en masse go out to smoke a cigarette, it's possible that people leave the pub without paying the bill.
In this branche various sounds are heard. Some think to get a drop in the number of visitors (20%), others are not worried because the coming months only warnings will be given, and by the time it really occurred that fines will be given, the spring starts and then there are already fewer visitors. And they will see later this year how to solve it, meanwhile hoping on a solution. In addition, the penalties are high and most bar owners can not afford it... So each one will be keeping an eye on to see how this will develop. A good example is the Gödör Klub which introduced a smoking ban.on October 1 this year. Due to this, the number of visitors increased that much that with all speed a smoking room was introduced. Szia Budapest will follow the developments in the coming months. But, there will be a lot of discussion about the smoking ban, that's for sure!

January 22, 2012: Jane Birkin sings Serge Gainsbourg
Likely very soon sold out and therefore an early announcement: At January 22, the world famous singer/actress Jane Birkin will perform a concert in the A38 music hall in Budapest. On this evening she will sing songs written by Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991).Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg ... onece lovers and world famous by the song "Je `T'aime.... ". In recent years Jane Birkin proved to be an excellent singer, the cd "Arabesque" belongs to Julius favorite records.
The idea to bring a tribute to Serge Gainsbourg was born after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011 and she was planning to give a concert to support the Japanese people. The band that accompanies her consists only of Japanese musicians. Jane started the tour in October this year and will be traveling in January and March 2012 around the world with this tribute.... Highly recommended, so if you are in Budapest or you live there ... don't miss this special concert! Tickets will cost (in advance) 6500 HUF, 7000 HUF at the box office. January 6-8, 2012: European Speed Skating Championships
At the beautiful outdoor ice rink in the Városligetipark in Budapest the European Speed Skating Championships for male and female will be held from January 6 to 8, 2012. A good test for the recently completely renovated ice rink with a new cooling system. The schedule for these days:Friday January 6 (from 16.00 hours): 500 meter and 3000 meter ice skating for female;
Saturday January 7 (from 12.00 hours): 500 meter for male, 1500 meter for female and 5000 meter for male;
Sunday January 8 (from 12.00 hours): 1500 meter for male, 5000 meter forfemale and 10.000 meter for male.
Sven Kramer and Irene Wüst are two of the Duch ice skaters which are present.
On Sunday, January 8, the Dutch-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce in Budapest organizes from 12.00 to 17.30 hours a VIP afternoon. At a discounted price of 12,000 HUF you are able to view the championship that afternoon from a special Dutch stand in the "F-box" With this ticket you also will get free Heineken beer in a tent, sponsored by the KLM. Budapest Architect online (temporary only in Dutch)
To celebrate the second anniversary of Szia Budapest, Julius is now working on the last major expansion: the website Budapest Architect. During the development of Szia Budapest the architectural section of the website became that great that it for several reasons better was to put the information into a separate website. Currently, the Dutch version of the website is in the testing phase. The English version will be built between January 1 and 15 January 2012. Not all links already work properly and there will undoubtedly be growing pains, but they will be removed in the near future. Julius is so proud of his new baby that he already announce this website. Kis Üzem - successor of the Sirály pub
On December 16, a new pub was opened in the VII. district of Budapest: "Kis Üzem" on the corner of Kis Diófa utca and the Klauzál tér. The staff are members of the former crew of Sirály, with new management. A nice, cosy pub, no retro design or a very tight sober furnishing. The pub has just opened and not everything is already as it should be.The special feature of the pub, and certainly for the VII. district, are the long opening hours: from 8.00 in the morning until late in the evening / night. This because the owners within a few weeks want to introduce a simple breakfast/lunch menucard. But at this moment the kitchen is not ready Given the crew, which attracted large crowds to Sirály, Julius expect that this pub also will be a success. Somewhere in the coming weeks,when the pub is fully operational, Julius will post an update.es: VII. Kis Diófa utca 2. At this moment: highly recommended!

New Jutka Rona book: Magyar Cigányok - Túlélök vallanak
On December 14 was the official presentation in the Petöfi Museum in Budapest of the newest book written and photographed by the Hungarian / Dutch Jutka Rona:: Magyar Cigányok - Túlelök. This is the Hungarian-/English version of the book "Hongaarse zigeuners - Verhalen van overlevers" published in 2010 in the Netherlands by Bas Lubberhuizen.Unlike the history of the Jews during World War II, there is very little written about the tragedy that befell the Hungarian Roma due to the terrorist acts of Adolf Hitler.
Jutka Rona visited several of these survivors. The good, penetrating, portraits of Jutka Rona show a strong survival power and vitality of the Hungarian gypsies. For writing this book she has used interviews of Roma journalists. The introductory article is written by Professor Zsuzsanna Ferg, the final article by Dr. Peter Szuhay. The photo above shows a different cover than the book which was presented on December 14. The word "Romas" is replaced by "Gypsies "...

Bookshop: book about Béla Bartók added
A new title is added to the Bookshop of Szia Budapest: Folk Music in Bartok's Compositions - A Source Catalogue: Arab, Hung Arian, Romana, Ruthenian, Serbian, and Slovak Melodies. Compiled by Vera Lampert who was from 1969 to 1978 staff member of the Budapest Bartók Archives.The book was published in 2008 by the Institute for Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. ISBN number: 9789632271644. Book has 242 pages and is in English.Besides an extensive introduction, the book contains all 313 pieces of music that Bartók used for his compositions, complete with the sheet music. Comprehensive records make it easy to find things. The book has a CD with 215 tracks of music, it are the digitized versions of original recordings from early 1900. Book is new and sealed, and Julius was able to get a few copies. Price: 12.50 euro excluding shipping.

December 16: Stylewalker Night
For all design and fashion lovers the evening of December 16 is a date to remember and to keep free. Between 19.00 and 24.00 hours the Stylewalker Night will take place again: 28 designer shops and places to food and drink in District V. are this evening focussing on fashion, design and food. Various bars and shops also will have exhibitions.Among the participants in this evening are the Design Terminal, the Boglarkavetta Design Studio, Esztille and the Rhododendrons Art & Design Shop. During this evening you will receive a 20% discount at the participating shops.One of the participating pubs is the always cosy Csendes pub (Julius favorite, also because of the good service).
On December 21 from 19.00 to 24.00 hours an afterparty will be held at the Innio pub with gigs by two DJs. The website of the organization (in Hungarian) provides the whole program, including a map and adresses.

20-28 december: Nedgyed 6 és Negyed 7 Kulturális Festztivál
On December 21 the Jewish Hanukkah celebration will start: the Festival of Light which lasts eight days. On this occasion, the "Nedgyed 6 és Negyed 7 Kulturális Festztivál" will be held in the heart of the Jewish Quarter in Budapest. The festival starts on December 20 at 18.00 hours with a special Flash Mob at the corner of the VII. Király utca and Csány utcai, where everyone, accompanied by fire jugglers, walks to the Klauzál tér where an art project will start.During this evening and the days thats following, a variety of musical performances, movies and other events will be held. The movies all be held in the renewed Sirály, and show films that have been made by students of the Sam Spiegel Film School in Jerusalem.
Another special event will be held on December 22 in Fogasház: The Chrismukkah Üneppi Bazar. A special Christmas market, with design, fashion and other special gifts. Time 11.00-20.00 hours. On December 23 there is a lecture / introduction on the design of the Eight Days Design Group (see below) about their modern designs for the Jewish liturgy.
Most concerts and others evemenents are free to visit and also several restaurants offering a discount on food and drink (as far as now known by showing a festival card, which is freely available). The English website is not yet fully operational, therefore the link refers to the Hungarian version. On December 19 an update on Szia Budapest will be placed about the program and which events are recommended by Julius.

The unique Kozma utca Jewish cemetery
The Kozma utca Jewish cemetery .... always special and impressive. Everybody by Julius guided on this cemetery was impressed by the monuments and the dilapidated splendor. Everyone is surprised that so carelessly be handled with a unique heritage location.And then the participants will see during the private tour only a few of the monuments, the cemetery is too large to show everything. One of the unique features on this cemetery are tombs that you rather will expect on a Catholic cemetery than on a Jewish cemetery. The photograph below shows such a strange monument made in 1948, but there are many other also unique monuments ... Julius is glad if he's able to show you them!

All kind of Christmas markets
Three weeks before Christmas starts, all Christmas marktes in Budapest are open. The most important are:Vörösmarty tér: the biggest one, held this year for the 13th time till December 30 and is daily open (exept December 25 and 26) between 10.00 and 20.00 hours. A very nice, cosy and huge market with over 35 stalls and a seperate square for food and drinks. Beside it there are daily concerts and other performances. Eye-catchers are this year the Christmas tree and the very special lighting of the Gerbeaud building. Honory guest this year is Belgium and you are able to buy Belgium chocolats and beer (near Gerbeaud). With a Budapest Card you'll get a discount of 10% at every stall.
WAMP karácsonyi vásár: On December 4, 11 and 18 the WAMP Christmas fairs will be held. A mixture of design, fashion and food. A market where you are able to buy unique designs/art made by Hungarian designers. This year the market will be bigger than ever with over 200 contributors. A very cosy market, which attracts many parents with kids. The fair is open between 10.00 and 18.00 hours. Location: Millenáris B-building - II. Kis Rókus utca 16–20 (just behind M2 station Széll Kálmán tér).
Kreatimm vásár - Design elvitelre: On December 10 and 11 the 15th Kreatimm fair will be held in the Iparmüvészeti Múzeum (Museum of Applied Arts): "design for take-away". A bit WAMP with over 100 contributors: fashion, accessories, jewels, ceramics, home decoration, toys, design objects and much more. Entrance fee: 800 HUF (kids under the age of 14 have free admission). Open on both days between 10.00 and 20.00 hours. Location: Iparmüveszéti Múzeum, IX. Üllói út 33-37.
Other markets:
Feszek karácsonyi vásárSmall scale, design, food and drink. It is widely advertised, but a visit barely worth. Open till December 24 between 10.00 and 24.00 hours. Location: VII. corner Dob utca 57 / Kertész utca 36.
Gozsdu Passage karácsonyi vásár
A Christmas market which till now not was very vivid, but maybe this will change in coming days. Bit sober and only a few participants. Location: VII. Gozsdu passage (between Király utca and Dob utca)
Szent István Bazilika karácsonyi vásár
In front of the Szent István Basiliek this year for the first time a Christmas market be held. A nice Christmas market, cosy, and both Christmas products and Food, and there is a small iceskate rink for children. Location: V. Szent István tér.
This is just a selection, because everywhere in the city you can find wooden stalls with Christmas products, gifts and food and drink, almost all in the same way and often with (almost) the same products. On December 16 there also will be held a Stylewalker Design Night, but more information about this event will be soon to find on this website.

André Kertész exhibition: last month with discount on the entrance fee
Till December 31, the very interesting André Kertész exhibition is still to view in the Hungarian National Museum. Highly recommended when you visit Budapest this month (in fact a "must see" exhibition). When buying tickets online you'll get a discount of 50% on the entrance fee.In addition: the upcoming Saturdays are called "This Must Be Andre Kertesz". Between 10.00 and 14.00 hours you will get a discount of 50% on the entrance fee of the Kertész exhibitions. Finally, at December 31 an event will be held called "New Year's eve with Kertesz", an event during which the exhibition officially will be closed. National pride around 1930 (1) - sgraffiti art by Ferenc Márton and Sándor Nagy
After the First World War and the Treaty of Trianon as result of it, the economy of Hungary collapsed. In the years that followed hardly any buildings were realized in Budapest. Around 1925/1926 this started to change and again a period began in which hundreds of buildings were built.During this period there was from about 1927 to 1932 a trend by which many buildings got ornamentation with references to the Hungarian history or folklife. One of those art forms are the 26 remaining colorful sgraffiti artworks created by Ferenc Márton and Sándor Nagy. The artworks were placed on the buildings designed by the architect István Medgyaszay. On this page a selection of these artworks.

November 26 and 27: Spájz - WAMP gastro vásár
At the weekend of November 26 and 27 a different than usual WAMP fair will be held: Spájz. Largely not focused on design products, but on food and drink.During this gastronomic fair mainly traditional handcrafted products made by small companies will be presented which you can taste and buy. The fair is divided into six parts:
1) (Home) canning: jams, syrups, chuttney and anything else that can be canned or bottled;
2) Drink: craft beers, wines, spirits and cocktails;
3) Animal: fish, meat, cheese, with special attention for Mangalica meat;
4) Sweet: cake, chocolate, truffles, cookies;
5) Fresh: vegetables, fruit, bread. Among these products e.g. freshly squeezed juices and walnut-raisin bread;
6) Mixed shelf: Coffee, tea, spices, oil, vinegar and so on.
There are also cookbooks and some design products for sale. Both Saturday and Sunday at 12.00 and 16.00 hours workshops will be held where you are able to learn making e.g. chocolates or a cake.
A great opportunity to get inspiration for the coming holidays or already to buy some delicious products. The website (click on the picture) provides more information. And, to write down in your diary: the regular WAMP Christmas fairs will be held this year on December 4, 7 and 18 on the same location. On both days the fair is open between 10.00 and 18.00 hours. Hanuka 21: design of the Eightdays Design group
In less than one month, on December 21, begins the Jewish Hanukkah celebration, the Festival of Lights that lasts eight days. The first day begins with sunset, the last day ends with the sunset. To celebrate these days, in a Hannukah menorah (an 8 plus 1 candleholder), candles be lit, the number determines the day of the holiday. This is accompanied by various rituals.During the "Design, Hét" the design days which were held in Budapest in late September / early October, was the opening of an exhibition of Eightdays Design group, consisting of the designers: Orsolya Kecskes, Ézster Hajdu, Marcell Egi and András Darányi. This group aims to develop modern forms of artefacts to be used in the Jewish liturgy. Objects, from which shape already for centuries is fixed.
The first project of this group was designing a modern Hanukkah menorah. This candleholder was originally a form based on the devastated candleholder that was found in the Temple in Jerusalem. The Eightdays Design Group has designed an even octahedron, each of its sites corresponding to one of the days of the holiday. As the days pass, the candleholder must be turned to another side. The sharnash candle is placed at the tip of an axis that passes through the two tipps of the octahedron, and is thereby set apart from the others. The group designed the menorah of various materials, including stone and a very elegant wood copy. These Hanukkah chandleholders are handmade and there is still no information on pricing or availability.
Now Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, weather is imminent, a opportunity to put these designers and their contemporary elegeante design for this festival in the spotlight. November 27 - December 1: Zsidó kulturális es gasztronómiai fesztivál
In late November, you have the opportunity to learn more about the Jewish cultural life and get familiar with the Jewish kitchen. Particularly in and around the Kazinczy utca (VII. district) various activities will be held. Among others, the concert on November 27 at 16.15 hours by the Z'mirim klezmer band, is worth to visit.To get you acquainted with the typical Jewish cuisine you are able to buy a bracelet for 400 HUF. By showing this bracelet in a number of selected restaurants and coffee houses at different locations in Budapest, you'll get a discount on food and drinking. For example, you'll get the opportunity to taste kosher cakes.
With this bracelet you also get a discount of 100 HUF on the entrance price for a visit on the Orthodox Jewish synagogue in the same Kazinczy utca. Building of the month November online
The Building of the month November 2011 is a building that's so worthwhile that it if you would get the opportunity to see it at the inside you immediatly should book a flight to Budapest. This because it's is a must for anyone interested in architecture and interior design from the period 1900-1915.The Széchenyi István Kereskedelmi Szakközepiskola is a trade school in District VIII. in Budapest and designed by the architect Bela Lajta (1873-1920). A monumental building which is like a fortress within the fairly narrow Vas utca. At the outside the ornamentation and architecture for which the architect is famous and inside....
People complain that many original interior items been disappeared. However, what now a days still exists in terms of interior objects is so unique that you may be glad that so much has been preserved. Outside the design of the building, Bela Lajta designed also the furniture, lamps, murals and so on in this school which therefore is a real "gesammt kunstwerk". November 23-30 - Anilogue: Nemzetközi Animacios Filmfesztivál
Another festival to look forward to. From November 23 to 30 the "Anilogue" festival be held: an international festival dedicated to animation movies. Mainly in three cinemas (The beautiful "Urania"and also in Toldi and Topkino) a selection of over 10 long animated movies will be shown. There is also a world premiere "The Tragedy of Man" by the Hungarian movie director Marcell Jankovic. A movie which after 25 years is completed.On November 26 and 29 6 nominated movies are shown to the public in the "Cartoon Nominees" event. The Dutch movie "Pivot" from 2009 and directed by André Bergs is one of these movies. During the competition "category A - Animated Shorts ", which be held on three days and showing 30 movies from 16 countries, also a movie with a Dutch contribution is present: Sync
Besides the selection of high quality animation movies, there are other nights such as "Anime Haiku" on November 27: a selection of Japanese animated movies and on November 25, 26 and 27, evenings be held entitled "World Panorama". This is a selection of favorite films choosen by the visitors of several festivals.
It is a very fascinating and comprehensive festival that every fan of animation will tempt The good website {in English} provides excellent information about the program, the movies and so on. A number of movies is only allowed for visitors above a certain age.
Julius preference, based on the given information, are two films: A cat in Paris and The Rabbi's Cat. Finally, visiting the festival and you get thirsty, the official drink during this festival is Keserü Mez (Bitter Honey) a special beer from one of Hungary's small breweries.

November 15-18 - VII. Nemzetközi Táncfilm Fesztivál
From November 15 to 18 November the seventh edition of the Nemzetközi Táncfilm Fesztivál be held. Spread over a number of cinemas a couple of movies about dancing be shown.The highlight is the documentary made by Wim Wenders about Pina Bausch. This movie in 3D runs on 15 November at 18.00 and 20.30 in the Corvin Mozi, VIII. Corvin Koz 1. Ticket costs 1800 HUF. Although these two performances are officially sold out, you can try to get a ticket. Otherwise you'll have another change to watch this movie on November 16 at 13.30.

Amsterdam School influences: a tour along several buildings in Budapest with influences of the Amsterdam School and one building with influences of the Dutch architect Dudok. During this tour also a street will be visit that for some years was named after one of the Dutch queens.
Early Art Nouveau 1897-1904: a tour along the earliest buildings in Budapest with Art Nouveau ornamentation. No buildings designed by Ödön Lechner but by other architects like Frigyes Spiegel and Emil Vidor and in an Art Nouveau style which is more western and used e.g. in Vienna.

Again ice skating in the Városliget park
After a renovation of almost two years it's possible again to skate on the magnificent ice rink in the Városliget Park (Városligeti Müjegpálya). The new ice rink, located on the largest lake in this park and covering an area of 12,000 square meters, will open on November 14, 2011.The past two years was worked hard to renovate the ice rink and the buildings at one side of the rink and also a new cooling system was build. If everything works fine, the ice rink would have a constant temperature of -10 degrees, even if the temperature is 15 degrees above zero. The location, in the park and surrounded by trees, creates a magical atmosphere.
If you visit Budapest this winter, take your skates with you to skate on this unique location, or else you can rent skates on the spot (700 HUF per hour). During the week the ice rink is open from 9.00-13.00 and from 16.00-20.00 hours. Admission: 1000 HUF. At weekends the ice rink is open from 10.00-14.00 and 16.00-20.00 hours. Admission: 1300 HUF. The best way to reach the ice rink: take Metro1 and get off at the Hösök tere stop. The rink is located behind this square. At this moment the website doesn't provide more information.

November 20: Diplomata Vásárra
An event to write in your agenda with a red pencil and a day to keep free: On Sunday, November 20, the Diplomatic Spouses Budapest (the association of partners of the Ambassadors in Budapest) will organize a Diplomatic Fair between 11.00 and 16.00 hours in the Intercontinental Hotel in Budapest. Holland Design Napok - review
A brief review of the Holland Design Napok, the Dutch design days which last week were held in Budapest. It was a good attempt to promote Dutch Design, though it was sad that not all events attracted many visitors.The event began with a kick-off evening in A38 with a spectacular performance of the band Schradinova. Pleasantly busy but less public than the band deserved, for it was a fantastic concert that calls for a repeat with more visitors. In public remarks as "Caro Emerald music", but lead singer Janne Schra sings already for many years this style of music. In Julius opinion it's a mixture with strong affinities with the Dutch singer Fay Lovsky.
Also a crowded event, was the good lecture held on November 6 by the architect Allard Meine Jansen about Dutch design and the designs made by his office. Partly due to the combination with the WAMP design market and a few nice posters that draw the attention on this lecture to the visitors of the fair, about 120 people listened to the lecture. Remarkably was that Allard talked about designing for the upcoming Star Wars generation which anywhere uses WiFi ... Apparently is Budapest more modern comparing to Amsterdam, because using WiFi in bars and shopping malls is the most natural thing in the world in this city.
Unfortunately the lecture that followed afterwards and which was held by Angela de Weijer of Beyond Data Lab, attended by only a handful of people. Perhaps the late hour (in the late afternoon and almost closing of the fair) has played a role. Too bad, she deserved more listeners. The opening earlier in the day, by the Dutch ambassador Mr. R. Milders on the occasion of the exhibition about the Subjective Atlas of Hungary also did also not attract a huge number of visitors. This exhibition still can be viewed till November 30 (between 10.00 and 18.00 hours) in the Europe Pont building in the Millenáris park. How many people visited the Eat Love Budapest performance by Marije Vogelzang is not yet known, there was no time to visit it personally.
All in all it was a successful event, but with a bit more attention and publicity, the promotion of Dutch design can even be better, for example, by Dutch designers let take part in a WAMP fair. But it was a very good initiative of the Dutch Embassy to support this event.

All Saints in Budapest
November 1, 2011 ...tram 28 to the Kozma Catholic cemetery is very crowded. There is even a special schedule created to transport all people and the tram almost continuously runs the 10 km long section.In the period from October 29 to November 1, Budapest en masse commemorates the beloved deceased ones and November 1 is the official and busiest day.

Most Magyarul! 56
Some time ago, Most Magyarul! 56, the autumn issue of the bilingual Hungarian magazine has been published. In this anniversary year (Most Magyarul! celebrates his 15th birthday) each magazines contain a special theme issue that will appear in the magazine but these specials are also available as a separate booklet.This first special is dedicated to living in Hungary, full of tips for people who, like Julius did decide to live in Hungary.
Other topics in this issue include an article on Hungarian traditions in the kitchen, an article on Vesztö and an article about studying Hungarian in the Netherlands. It is again a good magazine and therefore heartily recommend by Julius.

November 3-7: Holland Design Napok
From November 3 to 7 the Holland Design Napok or the Dutch Design Days be held in Budapest. During these days, organised by e.g. the Dutch Embassy and the Mondriaan Stichting, Dutch design will be put in the spotlight. The program for these days is:November 3 - 20.00 hours: The start of the Design Days with a kick-off party in A38. Without any doubt it will be a swinging evening with concerts by following artists:
Schradinova: The band of Janne Schra who traveled with her former excellent band Room Eleven in the past years throughout the world and who won numerous awards. November 4, 5 and 6 - between 17.00 and 21.00 hours: Eat Love Budapest by Marije Vogelzang. In the exhibition area of A38 every day between 17.00 and 21.00 hours a continuous performance of 20 minutes be held. Marije Vogelzang is the leading eating designer in the world. Especially for these days she designed a performance based on Hungary's social-cultural landscape. Ticket price: 1000 HUF.
November 6 - 15.00 hours: Opening of the exhibition with pictures from the Subjective Atlas of Hungary, a book that was presented in August 2011 and what has been edited by the Dutch graphic designer Annelys de Vet in collaboration with Attila Bufdosö. October 22: World Liszt Day
On October 22, it's 200 years ago that the famous composer Franz Liszt (1811-1886) was born. On this occasion, in several cities, both in Hungary as, for example, Paris and Vienna concerts be held.Undoubtedly the highlight of the celebration In Budapest is the concert that starts on October 22 at 20:00 hours in the Szent István Bazilika: the beautiful Krisztus oratorio. An concert by the Magyar Nemzeti Filharmonikusok and the Magyar Rádió Gyermekkórúsa led by Zoltán Kocsis.
But on and around this day there are much more concerts. From October 21 to 23 in the Liszt Ferenc Emlekmúzeum es Kutatóközpont (Liszt museum and research center) many concerts be given. In the Mupa (Palace of Arts) on October 21 and 22 also concerts be held, including a performance of the two 'real' piano concertos of Liszt.
Finally: until December 3, 2011 a photo exhibition about Liszt called "The Many Faces of Liszt" be held in the hall of Mupa. On this exhibition also an interactive map is showing the travels of Franz Liszt.

Building of the month October: VI. Bajscy-Zsilinszky út 63
In the series "Building of the Month", the October episode is devoted to one of the first Art Nouveau buildings in Budapest: VI. Bajscy-Zsilinszky út 63 / Jokai utca 40. Dating from 1897 and designed by Frigyes Spiegel and Fülöb Weinreb. 2 architects who have been realized at least 5 early Art Nouveau buildings in Budapest around this time.The walls on both sides of the building are beautiful and in a completely different style than the Art Nouveau buildings designed by Ödön Lechner. Creating an Artwork on the VIII. Kisfaludy utca
The Kisfaludy utca ... a reasonable dilapidated street in District VIII and with two gaps between the buildings. Places where project developers hoped to built apartment complexes. At one location, the construction of a building ended long ago although the building isn't finished, the other location is a gaping hole.Since two days, several people are working At this location on a piece of art. On the walls, after be painted black, artworks be made showing interior drawings of a house. Julius makes regular pictures of the progress and, as soon as the work is finished, you can expect a page about the creating of this artwork.

October 15: DJ Ferry Corsten on the Bönusz Electronic Music Festival
At October 15, 2011 the Bönusz Electronic Music Festival will be held in the Hungexpo. This mega event, held on on 4 stages, starts at 19.00 hours till early in the morning (the last performances will start at 07.00 hours)One of the artists / DJ 's is Ferry Corsten, one of Holland's most famous DJ's who has already given numerous performances in Budapest. His show will be held from 01.00 till 04.00 hours in the Beck's Arena 3. It is not the only Dutch DJ who gives a performance, also Joris Voorn and Jochen Miller are giving a show, which are shorter than the Ferry Corsten performance.

October 22: Book day/market for Hungarian students Dutch
On October 22, 2011 the website Hongarije Vandaag organizes in cooperation with the Nederlandse Studenten Vereniging, the Nederlandse club and the "Babilon Nyelvstúdió school, a book day / market in Budapest for students and alumni Dutch in Hungary.During this event workshops for students are kept about writing, journalism, cookbooks, cultural differences and about translation of text. Also, a second hand bookmarket be held where Dutch books are available for students and alumni Dutch. More information on the website of Hongarije Vandaag.
To celebrate this event, Szia Budapest has created a page with images of reading children which can be found on the walls of schools in Budapest. All these artworks were made in the first half of the 20th century and includes statues, reliefs and mosaics. And, in particular the mosaics are of great beauty. Fözde Feszt Beer festival Oktober 6-9
From October 6 to 9 the 2nd Fözde Feszt Beer festival with craft brewed beers, be held in the VIII. district. 19 Hungarian and 4 foreign brewers are present to taste their brews to the visitors.And, it are not just standard beers that you can try: for example there is a beer with an alcohol content of 14%, called Samurai, there is nettle beer, chocolate beer, and so on .... It will be a difficult choice to choose, because there are in total more than 60 types of beer.
Outside the tasting of beer, a small exhibition about the history of beer brewing in Hungary be organised in the foyer of the library on the Szabó Ervin tér.
The festival takes place between the Kálvin tér and Krúdy Gyula utca, with the squares Baross utca / Szabó Ervin tér and Mikszáth tér in between. All restaurants and pubs in this area are participating with special menus and other actions. The festival is to visit from Thursday to Saturday from noon until late evening, on Sunday from noon to 18:00.
Finally, a tip of Julius ... Prága Kávéház, Baross utca 8 is due to this festival also open on Sunday. Since long a favorite place to be with good service, delicious coffee and other drinks, and cheap but good sandwiches. In addition, one of the nicer terraces in Budapest and everyone taken by Julius to this terrace agrees this with him.

Again a warning for Interchange exchange offices
Already several times on this website the same warning: do not use the Interchange exchange offices!.Yet dozens of people every day stairs in the trick that is used by this office, by showing of, quite difficult, reading rates.And you also won't think that there are such enormous differences between the exchange offices. In concrete terms: early October 2011, there was a difference of more than 60 HUF per euro compared with the exchange rate of the best exchange offices. Café Budapest Festival October 7-16
On October 7, 2011 begins the successor of the traditional Autumn Festival, from now on called "Café Budapest - Kortárs Müveszeti Fesztivál". Different name, some other locations but still focused on modern dance, theater and music. The name is downright confusing, because apart from a series of modern dance (a dancer accompanied by a musician) every evening at 20.00 hours in a bar (Jedermann on October 7 and 8) in Budapest, all the performances take place in theaters or churches.The program is not very extensive, but contains some interesting elements, with likely culminating in the show which is given on October 7 and 8 in Trafó: "Woyzeck on the Highfield" by the Handspring Puppet Company (USA).
The dance performances in the bars are free, for other shows tickets must be purchased. The website about the festival, in English, provides information about the various performances and prices.

André Kertész retrospective to December 30, 2011
From September 30 to December 30, 2011 an extended retrospective exhibition is held in the Budapest National museum about the Hungarian photographer of Jewish origin André Kertész (1894-1985). This exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Jeu des paume museum in Paris, where this retrospective was exhibited in 2010/2011.Using over 250 photographs, books and magazines, the career of the famous photographer come to life in a thorough way. The exhibition is divided into four main parts: the Hungarian period 1908-1925, the Paris period 1925-1936, the American period from 1936-1985 and finally the Distortion pictures of nude females, which, at the time they were made, did not got the recognition they deserved.
It's a very interesting exhibition, but you have to take your time to visit this retrospective exhibition due to the large number of photographs which are shown. L1danceFest: Beautiful photographs by Edit Kozár
The past days, the 10th L1danceFest was held in Budapest. A very special event with often stunning dance performances by numerous dancers. It showed again the richness of culture in Budapest and the event was very good organised. New this year was that the main artistic members of the organisation wore clothes designed by Hungarian designers and it were beautiful creations.Edit Kozár, also involved in the organisation of this dance event, made a very beautiful series of photographs of the performances. Building of the month September online
With a little delay, the September edition of the series "Building of the month" is online: The Walkó-ház. A beautiful building, very early Art Nouveau from 1901 designed by the Jewish architect A. Kálmán Körössy. Beautifully restored both at the frontside and inside.And, as so often: also at this this building you have to look up to see the numerous images of animals and plants that are to view on the facade, but in particular the stunning Art Nouveau tile tableau called "Eva". All these designs were made by the artist Geza Maróti. Inside the building mainly the entrance hall and the stairwell are from interest.

September 21-25: L1danceFest
An anniversary this year: for the 10th time, the L1 Contemporary Dance Festival be held. A very interesting festival that Julius heartily recommend. On September 21 at 18.00 the opening takes place in the Gödör Klub and afterwards in Bakelit with performances by e.g. La Danza Intrusa (Catalonia) and Jackie Brutchse (CH) with the show "The Princess Moustache".The days after are mostly performances in the MU Színház and the Bakelit Hangár. On September 22 there's a special focus on Polish dancers and groups, including a performance by Malgorzata Haduch who graduated at the Amsterdam School for New Dance Development.
The complete program is compiled by Márta Ladjánszki, herself a dancer and choreographer. Outside the Polish contributions she also has invited dancers from countries such as the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia. Various Hungarian dancers give a performance too. Outside the dance performances on September 25 a concert be held by the group Belamühel which are playing on instruments made from waste. And on September 24 and 25 a Dance Improvisation workshop is given by Malgorzata Haduch.
Finally there are from September 20 to September 26 every day at 18.00 hours short dance performances to see at the Gödör Klub. The complete program and addresses of the locations can be found on the website of the organization. And, as far known, all performances are free to visit!

September 23 - October 2: Placcc art festival
On September 23 the annual Placcc festival will start. During this festival there are on several alternative locations, surprisingly theatrical performances, exhibitions, art, music and dance. A very nice festival where you for instance can see:* Etnomobil 2.0 - A traveling exhibition at 10 square meters in a caravan that has made many trips to museums and festivals. From September 23 to 25, between 14.00 and 20.00 hours, this caravan can be visited in front of the terrace of the ever cozy kávéház Prága (VIII. Baross utca / Szabó Ervin tér);
* Invisible Playground (D): Field Office Budapest - In the passage of the Nyugati station (Metro 3) near the entrance to the WestEnd shopping mall, this performance be held: communicate with aliens, dance for your life or find true love? New technologies meet childhood memories of board games and more.
* Terra Nova - During this performance the audience is taken on an extraordinary quest to the South Pole and beyond....;

A "new" Löffler building
The suspicion was already there, but today is in the opinion of Julius a "new" building added to the list of buildings designed by the brothers Béla and Sándor Löffler: II. Lajos utca 33 (1911-1912).The similarities in the facade decoration, but also the statues in the hall and the decoration in the stairwell led to no other conclusion. And the similarities with e.g. the building that the brothers designed at the VI. Székely Bertalan utca 2 / B are obvious. Although the building has been restored on the outside, the door of this building is still unrestored, and also includes typical Löffler decorations. Also the statues in the hall are still unrestored.
About the brothers Béla and Sándor Löffler is little, very little is known, the overview on Szia is the most complete one about the two brothers which can be found at Internet. Architects and designers of Jewish origin, among others of the beautiful Orthodox synagogue on the VII. Kazinczy utca 29-31 and adjacent building on the VII. Dob utca 35. In a period of less than 10 years, they designed some 19 buildings, almost all interesting. Their first design, the Piatschek-ház is described in word and images in the series "Building of the month". Probably, the list of buildings designed by the brothers, be expanded further....

September 17 : Tancházak Éjszakája
September 17 is for all lovers of Hungarian dance a day to free up. Then, from about 16.00 to about 5.00 at night the XII. Országos Szezonnyitó Táncházi Mulatság either the opening ceremony of the 22th dance season be held. Dance, children activities, arts and crafts, a market with CDs, books and so on, information about dance halls (dance schools), performances by bands and dance halls and much more.The afternoon program is, as usual in Hungary, specifically targeted on children, including dance and dance lessons for the young ones. The evening program is dance, dance and again dance by different groups and bands. The program is thus divided into two parts with a break in between. The entrance fee for the event until 18.30 hours is 600 HUF. For the evening the entrance fee is 1000 HUF. September 16: dancing on the terrace
One of the nicest returning evementen during the summer, is dancing on the terrace of the Gödör Klub: Keep Swinging! Utcatánc a teraszon. From 17.00 a DJ plays dance music and put the first dancers put hesitant their steps on the terrace, watched by many. Gradually it gets busier and busier with non-professional and professional dancers and swing music by e.g. Caro Emerald. Young and old are dancing, and it's also nice looking at it from the side. Usually at the beginning of the evening the DJ is replaced by a live jazz band and sometimes there are also a number of dance demonstrations. When it's good weather, this event is highly recommended! September 17 and 18: Heritage Days
For all architecture enthusiasts or those who just want to view a special building at the inside, it is advisable to free up the weekend of September 17 and 18. On these days, the Kulturális Örökseg Napjai (Heritage Days) be held. Throughout Hungary and also in Budapest.The event is primarily focused on Hungarians and therefore almost the whole website of the organisation and the program book are in Hungarian. It is a big job to find out which buildings are interesting and when open, because this varies for each building.
Several buildings from the chapter "Building of the month" on this website can be viewed, together with other very interesting buildings. Including the school on the VIII .Vas utca, designed by Béla Lajta and built in the period 1909-1912, the Geological Institute (1899) designed by Ödön Lechner and The Újpest synagogue (1896) designed by the architects Henrik Böhnm and Ármin Hegedüs. Only three examples, but Julius has compiled a page where 20 extraordinary buildings are described which are to visit in Budapest in the weekend of September 17 and 18 and with the opening times. Guided tours: changes and additions
By the experience of giving tours in the past 6 months, it proved that is was necessary to adjust a few things. From nowon for the guided tours there are no prices per session, but a fixed price for all guided tours which each lasts between 3 and 4 hours. The very low prices are, where possible, maintained, only the custom made individual guided tours got an hourly rate of 10.00 euro. Julius wants to keep it easy accessible. the rules / conditions are slightly modified.In addition, two new guided tours are in base ready, but some research still must be done:
- Dutch influences in Budapest: a guided tour, primarily, along buildings built in the Amsterdam School style, or with influences of this style;
- Art Nouveau in Budapest: a guided tour along several notable buildings which you as a tourist (but also when you are living in Budapest) will not easily seen, including a building with a door that very much is influenced by the English Arts and Crafts movement.

Graffiti art on The Wall of Fame
The Wall of Fame is one of the locations in Budapest where often the most beautiful graffiti art can be seen. Since March Julius visit this location regularly and makes photographs of the ever changing artworks. This has led to an almost monthly overview that shows the highlights of each month. The picture below was made in August at The Wall but is disappeared since the end of the month. Since mid-August the chapter Graffiti art in Budapest is moved to the website Budapestgraffiti because the subject got too big for the websites Szia and Sziabudapest. 7-10 september: Jazzforum Budapest
Jazz lovers will have good days ... 4 days Jazz in Budapest at 5 locations. Specifically: 23 concerts in which contemporary jazz music is played. The festival starts on September 7 with two concerts at MuPa and on September 8, 9 and 10 are at 4 different locations each evening concerts. Every evening ends with a jazz concert which begins around 23.15 in the Jedermann pub. On September 9, Hans van Vliet, jazz musician par excellence and the man behind the Jedermann pub, will play together with the Grencsö Open Collective + Rudi mahall. Location: Trafó, starting 21:30. Hop-on Hop-off ticket no alternative for public transport passes
Julius frequently was asked by visitors of the website if they better could buy an Hop-on Hop-off ticket for the public transportation in stead of a normal ticket. The answer is very simple: no. Hop-on Hop-off is an excellent way to see some highlights of the city, especially for short stays, and to get acquainted with the city.As an alternative to public transport passes, however, it has many disadvantages:
- You should be mandatory to use the tour buses that departing each 30 minutes (to end of October, then less often) and driving a fixed route with a few stops. Full is full and you will have to wait half hour for the next bus;
- The buses run between April and November only between 10.00 and 17.30, so you are not flexible;
- From the 21 stops only 13 have a 30 minutes schedule, the others an hourly schedule;
- Normal tickets are not valid in the public transport!;
- The ticket is valid for 24 hours in the summer months, although currently in advertisements 36 hours is called, and the 24 hours started at the time you buy the ticket. This means that you only a limited number of hours actually can use the ticket. There is also a combination ticket offered for 24 hours using the public transport too, but you pay the normal price for this one day of unlimited travel on public transport in Budapest.
Therefore: a public transport pass for 3 days (3850 HUF) or 7 days (4600 HUF) provides more flexibility and options when you are in Budapest and the public transport gives you the maximum freedom to explore the city.
Finally: you get a bonus booklet with coupons when you buy the ticket ...Don't expect too much of it... the restaurants that participate are already belonging to the more expensive in the city, and you get 20% discount, but you will afterwards have to be notified that the service is not included and this is quickly in these restaurants 15%, or there are conditions which they tell you in the restaurant. Other discounts often means no more than 0.80 to 1.50 euros.

In terms of cultural activities September always is a busy month in Budapest, but this year there seems to be even more activities then in earlier years. In the coming days, Julius will write several articiles about the activities, but already some highlights at a glance:Music and dance:

Building of the month updated
Good news for those who are following the series "Building of the month": the delay in adding new episodes is solved and from today on the episodes from the month May (Piatschek-ház), June (Napóleon-Udvar), juli (Falk Miksa utca 13) and August (Baross utca 74) can be viewed.Beside of it the episodes of the month April (Schiffer villa) and March (Palatinus-házak) are updated and new photographs are added..
From September 15 on, monthly new episodes will follow, because there are dozens of buildings that deserve a place in this chapter of the website Szia.

Jewish Summer Festival from August 27 till September 5
Allready for several weeks, almost un-Hungarian, a huge advertisement campaign take place promoting the Zsidó Nyari Fesztivál that takes place from August 27 to September 5. A festival that begins to take an increasingly important place in the series of festivals which are held in Budapest.Julius visited the festival last year and was very impressed, especially by the performance of the musical " Piaf " by the Beer Sheeva Szinház and sung in Hebrew. It was one of the best theatrical performances that Julius ever has seen. Part of the concerts take place in the Dohány synagogue and the equally brilliant Uriana cinema. And also this year there are many outstanding performances that are worth a visit.
The program is so extensive that Julius refers to the website, which also is in English. However, Julius highly recommended five concerts:
August 28: The Metropolitan Opera of New York with brass including the Rhapsody in Blue by Gerswhin;
August 29: Legends of world music;
August 30: Contemporary dance in two parts;
September 1: Cantor's concert;.
September 5: concert by the Budapest Klezmer Band and the Vuijicsics ensemble.
When you visit a concert, keep in mind that ther be held several security checks. Your bag or backpack can be controlled and often there are detection gates. When a concert be held at the synagogue, the men are obliged to wear a yarmulke. If you do not have this with you, you'll need to hire this (cost: last year 500 Forint, which you return back after the concert). And, last but not least: On Saturday, September 2, there are no concerts or activities, this because of the Sabbath.

Art on lake exhibition closes within three weeks!
September 4... it is fast approaching. The day that the highly successful open-air exhibition "Art on lake" is closing. The organization estimates that over 500,000 visitors have seen the exhibition and the last days there was definitely a great interest of visitors of the Sziget festival. Julius visited the exhibition regularly in recent months and indeed it was always very busy and both the rowing boats and the cushions on the deck were very widely used.For security reasons, the work of Gert Robijns got a place closer to the promenade and also the art work Waiting for the birds by Josef Bernhardt seems to be moved. Beside of it the organization succeeded in raising the water level by which the artworks even more came to justice. Currently the organisation tries to find companies and / or collectors to sell a number of artworks. 4 were already sold when the exhibition started and one artist donated his work to the Museum of Fine Arts. If you are the owner of a large pond or other water-rich location and are interested in a beautiful piece of art ... Hurry!
On September 4 the exhibition closes with an evening organized by Poland on the occasion of
EU Presidency of this country in the second half of 2011. Academia Ruchu ((physical theater) gives a show at the Városligeti Csónakázótó, XIV. Olof Palme sétány 5. Undoubtedly this shall be a very special performance. Admission is free, starting time is not yet known.

Currency exchange: Do not use the Interchange currency exchange offices (unless you want to give your money away)
For almost one year, Julius warns for the behavior of the Interchange currency exchange offices in Budapest, which are givingyou an absurdly low exchange rate if you want to exchange euros into Forints. Obviously the warnings were not enough and the company still can continue its practices.
Today, August 14 (but also earlier) you get 215,60 HUF for 1 euro while the best currency exchange office gives you 272 HUF for 1 euro. Both prices include commission. This means about 20,00 euros less on an amount of 100,00 euros.... You are (again) warned!

August 18-21: Festival of Folk Arts - Highlights
Now most of the changes on Szia have been made, there is time again for Julius to focus on activities in Budapest. Around the National Day on August 20, in and around the Palota Budavari, the 25th Mestersegek Ünnepe festival be held. The festival theme this year: "Hagymány a divatban - viselet másként (tradition in Fashion, traditional wear in a different way).About 800 craftsmen will show their skills in booths and workshops. Special guests this year are Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Traditionally at festivals in Hungary, there is an extensive children's program (every day from 10.00-18.00 hours) and there are many concerts.
On August 19 and 20 the Kenyérszentelés és Mesterek Felvonulása (Consecration of the bread and Craftsmen Parade) will be held. Not in the Castle district, but on the Clark Ádám tér:
August 19 - 21.00: Concert by Ghymes, followed by a street ball that lasts from 22.00 - 24.00.
August 20 - 15.30: Start of celebrations and about 16.30 starting of the parade in which everyone walks from the Clark Ádám tér, via the Lánchíd bridge to the Basilica. Here begins at 17.00 a service by Cardinal Peter Erdó in which he will bless the craftsmen's bread. From 18.00-19.00 finally the Szent Jobb Kórmenet (procession) will be held. The festivities will be closed at 21:00 with the traditional fireworks which beautifully can be viewed from the Castle. Some other highlights of the festival:

Budapest Graffiti Art moved to a new website
As of Wednesday, August 10, 2011, the chapter "Graffiti Art in Budapest" will not be updated anymore on the website Szia. The cause .... the growing number of locations that Julius has discovered. This required a different way of working, than showing a location and only once making photographs of the beautiful art.Hence, on August 10, 2011 Julius' new child is born: the website "Budapest Graffiti Art". This seperate from Szia existing website, shows the developments of graffiti art in Budapest in words and images. At this moment of seven locations, visited between between March and early August 2011, graffiti art be shown. This on the same way as on the website Szia. In the coming weeks, new locations and other things belonging to this subject, shall be added. (at least as Julius' webhost Mijndomein is working properly, because the number of failures is very large and the word service is unknown for this company)
At this moment the new website is in English only, in the near future you can expect a Dutch version too. The existing pages on Szia about graffiti art shall be adjusted the coming days.

Most Magyarul! no. 55 has been published
Recently was published issue 55 of the Dutch / Hungarian magazine "Most Magyarul", and as always full of interesting articles. This issue can be described as a special on castles and fortresses in, among other places, Burgenland, the Hungarian part of Austria.But not only articles about castles. The issue also contains an article about the artist János Demeter Lóránt and the art of contrasts. In 2011-2012, several of his exhibitions will be held in the Netherlands.This issue also includes articles about the Kasparus brewery, learning Hungarian in Debrecen and a report of the conference on Roma policy, which was held in June 2011 at Clingendael (The Hague).

Hungary Fair on October 1, 2011 in the Netherlands
If you have plans to visit Hungary (and Budapest) this fall or next year Hungary, the Hungarian Fair is an interesting major event, which you should visit. On Saturday, October 1, 2011 the Fair will be held in Nagele (Dutch province Flevoland). The Fair is organised by the publisher of the Most Magyarul Magazine and the Kasparus brewery, and be held to celebrate the start of the 15th year of Most Magyarul, the bilingual (Dutch-Hungarian) Hungary magazine.Early September, Julius shall write an extensive article on the Fair and what you can expect on activities and music. Amy Winehouse, one of the main acts scheduled for the 2011 Sziget festival, died on the age of 27
On Saturday, July 23 died, much too early, the singer Amy Winehouse (Southgate, September 14, 1983 - Camden, July 23, 2011). Although she led in recent years a life that was dominated by alcohol and drugs, she was in base in a fantastic/excellent singer. This was also expressed in the many awards she received, she won as first British woman five Grammy Awards. During her career she made, beside some singles, including the fantastic Rehab, also two CDs: Frank (2003) and Back to Black (2006).With her death at the age of 27, she joined the "27 Club", an illustrious group of world-famous pop stars who all died at the age of 27: Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain. The Wikipedia page provides a detailed account of the life of Amy Winehouse.
Too bad that she is not able anymore, for example, to held a performance on the famous Sziget festival this year in Budapest (which concert maybe already was canceled due to her terrible concert in Belgrade some time ago), to show how good she was as a singer ....

Engelstalige website in beta versie klaar
17 juli 2011 is de beta versie van de Engelstalige website eindelijk voltooid. Nog vol grammaticale fouten, want het schrijven in het Engels doet Julius niet dagelijks, maar deze fouten zullen er in de loop der tijd wel uitgaan. Beter iets dan niets....Het was een pittige klus omdat ruim 150 pagina's vertaald en aangepast moesten worden. De Engelse versie betekende ook diverse layout aanpassingen. Aanpassingen die inmiddels ook zijn doorgevoerd op de Nederlandse website. De komende dagen zullen daarnaast op de Nederlandstalige website nog aantal veranderingen plaats gaan vinden en worden slordigheidjes verwijderd. Let op: Verschillende nieuwe namen voor Metro stations!
De verwarring door het sinds 12 mei omdopen van diverse straatnamen zoals die van het Roosevelt tér dat de naam kreeg "Schezenyi István tér" neemt steeds meer toe, zeker in het Openbaar Vervoer. Vanaf 1 juli officieel, voor zover bekend, maar nu al mondjesmaat toegepast, veranderen er nóg een aantal zaken. De belangrijkste:Metro 2
- Moszkvá tér is omgedoopt in "Széll Kálmán tér"
- Stadionok is omgedoopt in "Puskás Ferenc stadion"
Metro 3
- Ferenc Kőrüt is omgedoopt in Corvin-negyed.
Op dit moment worden de veranderingen in het OV aangepast maar het zal nog wel een tijdje duren voordat alles uniform is. Ook trams, bussen en, in mindere mate, trolley bussen kennen wijzigingen. Zie voor actuele informatie de website van het BKV.
Tot slot: tot 24 augustus is metro station Kőbánya-Kispest buiten gebruik. Maakt u vanaf het vliegveld gebruik van het openbaar vervoer, dan zut u tussen Kőbánya-Kispest en Határ út vervoerd worden met een bus, en op Határ út moeten overstappen op de metro.

To be or not to be
De website Szia gaat internationaal....momenteel wordt hard gewerkt aan de vertaling van de website in het Engels. Veel werk, dat zeker nog enige dagen in beslag zal nemen. Voor wat betreft een aantal rubrieken zoals Rondleidingen en Kunst is de eerste, ruwe, versie gereed, momenteel wordt hard gewerkt aan de rubriek Architectuur, die naar verwachting morgen in zijn geheel gereed zal zijn in de eerste versie. Daarna volgen Joods Budapest en de overige pagina's. In het logo van de website is een Engelse vlag opgenomen waardoor u de internationale versie kunt bekijken.De afgelopen dagen is verder hard gewerkt aan technisch onderhoud van de website en zijn al diverse schoonheidsfoutjes gecorrigeerd. Daarnaast zijn links naar onderliggende pagina's voortaan op iedere pagina hetzelfde: is er een pagina gekoppeld aan een artikel, dan krijgt u die pagina te zien door op de titel van het artikel te klikken en/of op de bijbehorende foto. Nieuw logo en andere zaken
Vanf 20 juni heeft Szia een nieuw logo, vooruitlopend op andere veranderingen. Een beeld dat Julius al lang in het oog had, maar pas zeer recent lukte het er een zo goed mogelijke foto van te maken die geschikt was om te gebruiken als logo. Het betreft een beeld van de kunstenaar Lajos Ungvári getiteld "Lány galambbal" (meisje met duif) en stamt uit 1962. Het beeld is in het 22ste district te vinden (bron: Szoborlap).De afgelopen week zijn er geen nieuwe onderwerpen aan deze Blog toegevoegd en ook andere wijzigingen zijn op de plank blijven iggen én zullen ook nog een weekje blijven liggen. Uitbreidingen en veranderingen op Szia, onder ander (technisch) onderhoud, zorgen ervoor dat er tijdelijk geen tijd is voor andere zaken. Dus, nog even geduld!

De Gödör Klub vrijdagmiddag 10 juni 2011 17.00 uur: de "Grandmother"van de Roma muziek Esma Redzepova, repeteert kort met haar band.... en, het klonk fantastisch. Dus dat beloofd wat vanvond qua concert!

Dit weekend: Ferencvárosi Festvál
Vanaf morgen (concerten voor 10 juni zijn wegens technische redenen afgelast) wordt er op het VIII. Bakáts tér (bij de Rady utca) het Ferencvárosi Feszivál gehouden. Een paar muziekoptredens zijn de moeite van het bezoek waard, alhoewel Julius zelf het Athe Sam festival bovenaan het lijstje heeft staan. Alle concerten zijn gratis toegankelijk:Zaterdag 11 juni:
19.00 uur: David Yengibarjan. Deze in Armenië geboren panfluitist geeft een concert waarin alle muziekstijlen vertegenwoordigd zijn;
20.30 uur: Hot Jazz Band. Vertolkt authntieke muziek uit de periode 1920-1940, voornamelijk Amerikaanse poulaire muziek uit die jaren maar ook Hongaarse filmmuziek uit die periode.
Zondag 12 juni:
19.00 uur: Párniczky Quartett. Joodse volksmuziek onder leiding van Jazz-gitarist párosító Nigun;
20.30 uur: Ralf Gauci, Sándor Szabó, Balázs Major trio. Een synthese van Oosterse en Westerse muziek.
Maandag 13 juni:
19.00 uur: Erdődy Kamarazenekar koncertje. Kamermuziek concert met onder andere muziek van Beethoven en Hummel;
20.30 uur: Muzsikás Zenekar. Al 35 jaar toonaangevend in de (Hongaarse) Volksmuziek. Het is altijd een feestje de optredens van ze.

Belangrijke mode/design evenementen op komst
Voor de liefhebber van eigenzinnige, originele mode en design zijn er met name in het weekend na Pinksteren weer volop activiteiten die stuk voor stuk de moeite van een bezoek meer dan waard zijn:11-17 juni: Design Gyár
De Designfabriek: dit is een expositie van werk van eindexamenkandidaten aan de Krea Kortárs Müveszeti Iskola. Voor zover bekend zijn het voornamelijk foto's van o.a. werk van studenten-modeontwerp. De tentoonstelling wordt gehouden in de Gozsdu passage (VI. district tussen Király utca en Dob utca) C-gebouw en is dagelijks open van 14.00-20.00 uur (zondag van 14.00-18.00 uur). Vanaf 19.00 tot 24.00 uur wordt de Stylewalker Night gehouden. Het is een feestje van 22 design/modewinkels (maar ook het Zara hotel) in het V. district. Nagenoeg alle deelnemers zijn gevestigd tussen het Ferenciek tere en Kálvin ter. Op 18 juni is in de Ötkert in de V. Zrínyi utca 4 een afterparty die duurt van 21.00 tot 05.00 uur. De nagenoeg maandelijkse WAMP markt wordt dit keer gehouden op 19 juni in het Erzsébet tér, boven de Gödör Klub. Van 11.00 uur tot 19.00 uur zijn hier stands van vele designers op het gebied van mode, interieurartikelen etc. Ook een aantal standhouders met bijzondere etenswaren zullen acte de precense geven. De ontwerpster van de maand, die traditiegetrouw ook aanwezig is, is in juni de mode-ontwerpster Beatrix-Camou Fehér. De Hongaarstalige website geeft meer informatie over haar ontwerpen. Als afgeleide van de WAMP markt is iedere zondag van 10.00 tot 19.00 uur de Gouba Gozsdu markt. Locatie: Gozsdu passage in het hartje van de Joodse wijk in het VI. district tussen de Király utca en Dob utca. De laatste afleveringen van de markt waren wat mat, met minder standhouders dan vorig jaar. Buiten designers op het gebied van mode, interieur etc. zijn er ook andere standhouders met onder andere antiek, boeken etc. Daarnaast zijn er, vanwege de locatie, ook altijd stands met Joodse producten. Athe Sam: 2 niet te missen hoogtepunten de komende dagen
Het V. Athe Sam festival is in volle gang en trekt 's avonds zeer vele bezoekers. De afgelopen dagen zat het terras van de Gödör Klub bomvol en was er een zeer prettige ontspannen sfeer. De organisatie heeft getracht zoveel mogelijk stijlen van muziek door Roma te programmeren en dat maakt het tot een afwisselend geheel.Vandaag, vrijdag 10 juni, en morgen, zaterdag, staan twee absolute hoogtepunten op het programma.
Vanavond om 23.00 uur (ongeveer): Esma Redzepova & Ensemble. Deze "grandmother" van de Romamuziek werd geboren in Skopje (Macedonië). Menig persoon die de film Gypsy Caravan uit 2007 heeft bekeken, heeft gezien hoe bijzonder ze is.... Kortom gaat dat zien!
Morgenavond om 20.00 is in het park het V. Athe Sam Gala... Ook dit beloofd een waar muzikaal pareltje te worden waarbij diverse Roma bands samen met niet Roma muzikanten er een feest van maken. Wie het Athe Sam festival van dichtbij meemaakt weet dat dan ook Romano Drom op gaat treden, de leden hiervan zijn zeer actief bij de organisatie van het festival. n.b. Julius hoopt u morgen enige foto's te tonen van het optreden van Esma Redzepova. De afgelopen dagen heeft hij helaas het avondprogramma moeten laten schieten, dit vanwege opleving van zijn ziekte, waardoor hij lichamelijk minder aankan. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door spanningen vanwege een bedrijf dat, gesteund door de beroepsgroep KbvG, zich wederrechtelijk enige honderden euro's heeft toegeeigend. De machtswellust van dit bedrijf en de onmogelijkheid dit geld, dat nodig is, op korte termijn terug te krijgen, zorgt voor enorme spanningen. En waarschijnlijk zal vervolging van Julius door justitie plaatsvinden omdat door het onrecht het niet meer mogelijk was verbaal nog netjes te blijven en gaat de veroorzaker vrijuit (die overigens - bij monde van J.Crepe te Almere die bij genoemd bedrijf werkt - ook al zelf heeft aangekondigd te hopen dat Julius naar Nederland terug zou keren zodat hij zijn hond een spuitje kon geven.... en andere bedreigingen). De arrogantie van de macht, want dan geven de politie én de beroepsorganisatie niet thuis......
... met je elastieke benen
Een liedje van jaren terug, toen over een foxtrot maar in Budapest was dat gisteravond van toepassing op het openings dansconcert van het 5e Athe Sam Roma festival in de Gödör Klub. Het was een eerbetoon aan de danslegende Béla Balogh. Begeleid door de Athe Sam Band werd het een meeslepend concert met waanzinnige dans waarvan je al moe wordt als je er naar kijkt. De vele toeschouwers waren zeer enthousiast. U kunt overigens vandaag en de komende 2 dagen vanaf 18.00 uur op het terras van de Gödör Klub zélf leren dansen.Vlak voor het openingsconcert vond de officiële opening van het festival plaats. Zoals te verwachten was, veel te laat. Deels behorend bij dit festival, deels ook omdat de weergoden parten speelden waardoor er op het laatste moment nog zaken geregeld dienden te worden om te zorgen dat de dansers op een droge dansvloer hun kunsten konden laten zien. Een gladde, natte vloer en waanzinnig snelle dans gaan niet samen.
Vandaag gaat het festival verder met om 12.00 uur een introductie over het Roma mentor programma, de film Train of Life (19.00 uur), eveneens om 19.00 uur een ronde tafel conferentie over het neerzetten van bepaalde groepen bij het geven van onderwijs.
Vanaf 20.00 uur barst het muzikale spektakel weer los met om 20.00 uur op het terras de Mohácsi Tambourra Band, om 22.00 uur in het Café Frankie Látó en vrienden en om 23.00 uur Etnorom in de grote zaal. Alle concerten zijn, zoals gedurende het hele festival, gratis toegankelijk.
Kortom, gaat dat zien en horen! En, zie met eigen ogen dat vooroordelen tegen Roma absoluut niet opgaan voor een zeer groot deel van deze bevolkingsgroep. Het is juist een uitgelezen mogelijkheid om meer te weten te komen over deze cultuur.

Margit Kovács: Keramische kunst in Budapest
Vanaf 7 juni wederom een nieuwe pagina over Kunst in Budapest: Keramische kunst van de beroemde Hongaarse kunstenares Margit Kovács (1902-1977). In Szentendre is een museum aan haar gewijd, maar Budapest is in feite een soort openlucht museum. Op vele plekken in de stad kunnen met name haar vroegere ontwerpen kunnen worden bekeken.Zoals bij de totstandkoming van nagenoeg iedere pagina op Szia het geval is, is ook deze pagina het resultaat van vele wandelingen. Het begon met een kunstwerk in het 13e district en vervolgens werden meer en meer kunstwerken ontdekt die onmiskenbaar door dezelfde kunstenaar waren ontworpen. De naam achterhalen was niet moeilijk, het eerste kunstwerk was gesigneerd.
De afgelopen weken heeft er nader onderzoek plaatsgevonden en zijn een aantal nog niet bekende kunstwerken op de foto gezet. Inmiddels bevat de pagina een bijna 100% overzicht van hetgeen aan kunstwerken, ontworpen door Margit Kovács, nog in Budapest te vinden is. Athe Sam Roma festival 6-12 juni
Nog 1 dag en dan barst het V. Athe Sam Roma festival ( itt vagyunk, we are here) los. Een fantastisch festival dat gedurende een week, met name in de avonduren, de Gödör klub op stelten zet. Bent u in Budapest of gaat u er de komende dagen heen, dan is dit een festival dat u niet 'moet' missen. Muzek, film, workshops, lezingen, tentoonstellingen en meer. Op 7, 8 en 9 juni kunt u vanaf ca. 18.00 op het terras leren dansen als een Gypsy..Het festival is mede opgezet om de negatieve sfeer en de vooroordelen die het woord Roma bij sommigen oproept te doen veranderen en daarbij begrip te kweken voor de Roma cultuur en het Roma leven. De organisatie streeft er daarbij naar niet te worden betrokken bij de politiek aangaande de Roma, maar organiseert wel discussies waaraan deelgenomen wordt door deskundigen op het gebied van de Romacultuur. Ëén van de drijvende krachten achter dit festival is Juicsi, u zult haar vaak bij de ingang kunnen zien zitten of druk heen en weer lopend.
Het volledige programma vindt u hier. Alle concerten zijn gratis toegankelijk en hou er rekening mee dat in Budapest en zeker bij dit festival, alles minder strak/georganiseerd gaat. De aanvangstijden van een concert zijn dus nooit 100% zeker, vaak kan het wat later worden.

Spoedig op Szia: Graffiti bij de Gödör Klub
5 juni 2011: De muren van een aantal gebouwen/walls in het park bovenaan de Gödör Klub worden omgetoverd in ware kunstwerken. In de vroege avonduren waren de kunstenaars, waaronder de kunstenaar Taker (zie foto) nog druk bezig met hun kunstwerken.Julius maakte een fotoreportage van de totstandkoming van deze kunstwerken en een aantal van deze foto's kunt u, compleet met de eindresultaten, op 6 of 7 juni op Szia verwachten.
Daarnaast wordt hard gewerkt aan uitbreiding van de Graffiti pagina's, de laatste weken zijn er weer vele pareltjs op muren in Budapest verschenen.

Vanaf 1 juni 2011 is het mogelijk om zeer exclusief te adverteren op Szia. Exclusief, omdat er maximaal 6! advertenties worden geplaatst in de linkerkolom tussen de menu onderdelen. Toneelvertellingen door Ursul de Geer in Budapest
Op zaterdag 28 mei houdt Ursul de Geer, gelouwerd theatermaker, een unieke, eenmalige, uitvoering van de theatervoorstelling "Bekentenissen".In deze toneelvertellingen vermengt Ursul de Geer het leven van Sandor Márai met zijn eigen leven. Op de piano wordt hij hierbij begeleidt door Jacob Boogaart.
Deze unieke en ongetwijfeld zeer boeiende toneelvoorstelling is tot stand gekomen op initiatief van Jaap Scholten en de Nederlandse Vereniging in Budapest. Op de site van Hongarije Vandaag staat een uitgebreid interview met Ursul de Geer over de voorstelling, zijn herinneringen aan Budapest en zijn liefde voor de boeken van Sandor Márai. Als u in Budapest bent of woont... laat de kans niet lopen deze unieke voorstelling bij te wonen!

Update 29 mei: degenen die de voorstelling niet zagen... u heeft wat gemist, gedurende bijna 2 uur vertelde Ursul meeslepend en uitermate boeiend over Sandor Márai, verweven met verhalen uit zijn leven. Het publiek luisterde zeer geconcentreerd en het was een voorstelling die meer dan voor herhaling vatbaar is. Ursul werd op de piano fantastisch begeleid door Jacob Boogaart, en dat maakte het tot een voorstelling die niet snel vergeten zal worden en die roept om de boeken van Márai te gaan lezen!

Müvészet a tavon tentoonstelling - update
20 mei 2011 .... nog 4 dagen te gaan voordat de tentoonstelling Müvészet a tavon (kunst op het meer) voor het publiek open gaat. De kunstwerken liggen allemaal op hun plek en de organisatie is koortsachtig bezig de puntjes op de 'i' te zetten. Bij alle kunst- werken wordt een bordje geplaatst wie de kunstenaar is, de roei- boten liggen al klaar en tientallen bouwvakkers zijn met man en macht bezig het gebouw aan het meer alsnog klaar te krijgen voordat de tentoonstelling opengaat. 22 mei is de officiële opening waar Julius bij zal zijn en dan in de gelegenheid is om met de (Nederlandse) kunstenaars te spreken. Een verslag hiervan zal óf op Szia óf op Hongarije Vandaag te lezen zijn. Foto's van een aantal kunstwerken en beknopte informatie over de 2 Nederlandse en 1 Belgische kunstenaar is hier te vinden.De foto hiernaast toont het kunstwerk 'Soul XII' van de Spaanse kunstenaar Jaume Plensa die tegelijkertijd met de tentoonstelling in Budapest werkt aan kunstwerken voor tentoonstellingen in het Madison Square Park in New York en het Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Engeland.

Bye Bye Roosevelt tér en Communistische straatnamen
12 mei 2011 .... Vanaf die dag verdwijnt de naam Roosevelt tér langzamerhand uit het beeld in Budapest om plaats te maken voor de nieuwe naam Széchenyi tér, genoemd naar de oprichter van de Hongaarse Academie van Wetenschappen aan het plein. Dit eerbiedwaardige instituut is ook de initiator van de naamsverandering. Het is niet de enige naamswijziging. In totaal hebben 26 straten, pleinen en een brug een andere naam gekregen.Zo'n verandering is ingrijpend en kostbaar maar het valt in het niet bij het in 1990 herstellen van de straatnamen die gedurende het communistische tijdperk waren omgedoopt. Hoewel het de bedoeling was de herinnering aan dit tijdperk uit te wissen, zijn heden ten dage deze straatnamen nog op vele plaatsen in Budapest te zien. Eindelijk weer een nachttram in Budapest
Voor alle tramliefhebbers is het goed nieuws: vanaf 1 mei heeft Budapest weer een nachttram, dit ter vervanging van bus 906. Tram 6 rijdt gedurende de hele nacht om het kwartier de route tussen Széll Kálmán tér (de nieuwe naam voor het Moszkva tér) en Móricz Zsigmond körtér (v.v.), totdat de normale dienstregeling weer aanvangt.Nieuw is dit plan niet... gaan oude tijden soms weer herleven? Menig tramliefhebber hoopt op terugkeer van legendarische lijnen als 67 die over de Thököly út reed of herleving van andere lijnen. Budapest telde ooit 70! tramlijnen (nu nog 25) en ook vele lijnen die 's nachts doorreden. De nachtdienst van lijn 6 werd in 1989 als eerste nachtlijn geschrapt om in de jaren daarna te worden gevolgd door het vervallen van de nachtlijnen 31, 28, 50, 49 en tot slot, in 1997, tramlijn 14.
De uitstekende website Villamosok (al moet u soms wel wat zoeken om de juiste informatie naar boven te halen) geeft zeer veel informatie over het Openbaar Vervoer in Budapest met onder andere wijzigingen in de lijnen, type voertuigen en zeer veel meer.

Müvészet a tavon - Kunst op het meer tentoonstelling
Op 24 mei begint in Budapest een zeer bijzondere tentoonstelling die tot 4 september gaat duren: Müvészet a tavon, of wel kunst op het meer. In het "meer" in het Varosliget park zijn vanaf die datum 25 kunstwerken te bekijken die in het water zijn geplaatst. Dat bekijken kan zowel vanaf de kant als vanuit een bootje dat u kunt huren om langs de kunstwerken te varen.Momenteel worden de kunstwerken op hun locatie geplaatst en wordt de laatste hand gelegd aan de renovatie van het gebouw aan het meer. Zoals te doen gebruikelijk bij dit soort renovaties in Budapest, loopt ook dit weer uit dus zal het een race tegen de klok worden alles op tijd af te krijgen.
Ook van Nederlandse en Belgische zijde zijn er een bijdragen in de vorm van kunstwerken van Laurens Kolks, Paul Segers en Gert Robijns. Door hier te klikken, krijgt u een uitgebreider artikel én de eerste foto's van de tot nu toe geplaatste kunstwerken.

Opwarmer voor het Athe Sam Roma festival
Als opwarmer voor het VI. Athe Sam - Roma össmüvészeti fesztivál - dat van 6 tot en met 12 juni in de Gödör Klub wordt gehouden, is er op 21 mei de 4e aflevering van de Athe Sam Klub. Vanaf 20.00 treden in de populaire en oh zo gezellige Gödör Klub de volgende bands/groepen op: Romano Drom, Nemjuci en Karaván Família. Gezien de vorige afleveringen zal dit een zeer swingende avond worden vol passie en opzwepende muziek. Bent u in Budapest... kom naar de "Gödör". De toegang is gratis.Het is dus een opwarmertje voor het Athe Sam festival dat Julius vorig jaar zag en dat een heerlijk festival is. Beetje chaotisch, veel Roma's op hun best gekleed, zeer swingende muziek, dans en andere activiteiten en een fantastische sfeer. Bij mooi weer zijn er ook buiten op het terras van de "Gödör" vele optredens.
De komende dagen zal het complete programma bekend worden gemaakt maar van de grote namen die dit jaar komen, is Emma Redzapova en haar ensemble de absolute ster. Daarnaast zijn er dansvoorstellingen en andere activiteiten. Het programma zal een dezer dagen worden gepubliceerd op de website van Athe Sam en ook op Szia zal er aandacht aan worden besteed (foto: poster op publicatiebord).

Uitbreiding van de pagina Joodse begraafplaatsen in Budapest
Vanaf 10 mei 2011 wordt het hoofdstuk over de Joodse begraafplaatsen in Budapest uitgebreid met beschrijvingen van de kleinere begraafplaatsen die in Budapest te vinden zijn. Veelal zijn dit locaties die, toen ze werden opgericht, nog niet behoorden tot de gemeente Budapest maar tot een van de dorpen eromheen. Veel van deze plekken zijn óf overwoekerd, óf door grafroof en de tand des tijds zeer aangetast.De pagina zal de komende dagen geleidelijk aan deze plekken weer gaan geven met beknopte beschrijvingen, de toestand heden ten dage en één of meer foto's. Rond 1 juni zal de uitbreiding compleet zijn en vindt u op Szia het meest uitgebreide overzicht van Joodse begraafplaatsen in Budapest dat op Internet te vinden is.
update 13 mei 2011: 12 kleinere Joodse begraafplaatsen zijn inmiddels bezocht en op de foto gezet. De eerste resultaten daarvan staan nu op de website.

Budapest was een paradijs voor de liefhebber van oude (neon-) reclame. Velen zijn inmiddels verdwenen, maar toch zijn deze pareltjes van reclame in meer of mindere staat nog in de stad te vinden. Al moet u wel goed kijken voordat ze opvallen. Julius heeft al meermaals meegemaakt dat, pas na vele malen een straat doorlopen, hem een oude vervallen reclame opviel. De onderstaande onopvallende opvallende bijzondere reclame was een typisch voorbeeld hiervan.De foto hiervan doorgestuurd naar een andere liefhebber van deze kunstvorm, leverde het commentaar op dat die afbeelding hem vaag voorkwam. Vlak daarna kwam de aap uit de mouw..... Deze dame hangt op 2 plaatsen in stad. De orginele versie én de aan de tijd aangepaste versie die aan de gevel hangt van een van de vele kroegen in Budapest die retro is ingericht. Elvis Budapest - zeer bijzondere comic
Tijdens de opening van het tentoonstelling van Joost Swarte (zie hieronder) werd ook de comic "Elvis Budapest" gepresenteerd. Deze comic is het resultaat van een workshop gehouden op 29 april 2011, waarbij een aantal Nederlandse, Finse en Estse stripkunstenaars een paar uur hun creatieve geesten loslieten op nummers van Elvis Presley. Het resultaat: een uniek stripboek, met een omslagontwerp dat is ontworpen door Joost Swarte en waarin, wat betreft de Nederlandse bijdragen, onder andere werk te zien is van Marcel Ruijters, Typex en leden van het collectief Lamelos. Het is een vervolg op de samenwerking van de Hongaarse kunstenaar Attila Stark en het Nederlandse kunstenaarscollectief Lamelos, van wie een gezamenlijke tentoonstelling over Elvis te zien is in galerie kArton. De uitgave verscheen in een zeer beperkte oplage van 120 exemplaren.De aanleiding voor deze workshop, gehouden in het kader van de tentoonstellingen van bovengenoemde kunstenaars in Budapest en het 7e stripfestival in Budapest op 30 april jongstleden, is het plan van de gemeente om in Budapest een plein naar Elvis Presley te vernoemen en hem daarnaast, posthuum, tot ereburger van Budapest te benoemen. Dit vloeit voort uit het gegeven dat Elvis in 1957 in de Ed Sullivan show het nummer "Peace in the Valley" zong. Volgens de overlevering als protest tegen het neerslaan in 1956 van de demonstraties tegen de Russische overheersing en er zou zijn gevraagd om geld en goederen te doneren om de arme Hongaren te ondersteunen.
Het is een nobel voorstel van de gemeente, maar het past ook in de vele plannen die momenteel zeker in Budapest leven om meer en meer afstand te nemen van alles wat Russisch is (de nadruk wordt in Hongarije overigens steeds meer gelegd op het nationalistische karakter). Zo zijn er plannen om het Sovjet monument op het Szabadsag tér te verwijderen en dreigt het Moskva tér een nieuwe naam (Széll Kálmán tér) te krijgen. Echter, deze sporen écht uit wissen zal nog heel wat voeten in de aarde hebben. Op of rond 5 mei zal er op Szia een pagina verschijnen die laat zien dat het Russische tijdperk nog steeds én nadrukkelijk in Budapest in beeld is.

Het waren vermoeiende dagen
Het waren vermoeiende dagen .... met name voor de Nederlandse
striptekenaars en
begeleiding die afgelopen woensdag naar Budapest kwamen
voor het stripfestival dat op 30 april in de Dürer kert werd
gehouden. Daarnaast waren er ook andere activiteiten
georganiseerd. Het begon
gelijk goed met op woensdag 27 april een openingsfeest in de galerie
kArton waar
de expositie
(tot en met 7 mei!) van het kunstenaarscollectief Lamelos, in
samenwerking met
de Hongaarse kunstenaar Attila Stark wordt georganiseerd. Een druk
bezocht en zeer gezellig feest dat later werd voortgezet in de
Roham kroeg,
waar de tentoonstelling van Typex (eveneens tot en met 7 mei) te zien
is. De dag daarop, 28 april, waren de kunstenaars in de gelegenheid de stad te bezoeken, waarna iedereen aan het eind van de middag werd verwacht op het buitenverblijf van de Nederlandse ambassade. Dit vanwege de traditionele Koninginnedag receptie. Het idee, geopperd door een van de aanwezigen daar, om na de receptie verder te gaan feesten in de qua inrichting zeer bijzondere Szimpla kert vond bijval en iedereen toog in taxi's de
berg af richting Szimpla om daar (en vervolgens elders tot diep in de nacht) verder te feesten. Op vrijdag 29 april volgde een workshop met Finse en Estse kunstenaars waar de bijzondere comic "Elvis Budapest" het leven zag. 's Avonds was de opening van de uitermate boeiende tentoonstelling van Joost Swarte in Loffice waarna weer een deel van de groep het fascinerende, bruisende nachtleven ging verkennen.
De
Nederlandse ambassadeur, Robert Milders (in een wit t-shirt), samen met
zijn staf en organisator van het festival Ádám Halmos op de foto gezet
en gade geslagen door Gert Jan Pos, die mede aan de wieg stond van dit
bijzondere evenement.
Dat betekende weinig slaap, want om 9.30 uur zaterdagochtend werden de meesten verwacht op het stripfestival waar uitgebreid de tijd werd genomen om boeken te signeren, met fans te praten en andere promotionele zaken. Aan het eind van de middag ging iedereen, onder leiding van de Nederlandse ambassade, naar de fiets- demonstratie Critical Mass, een gebeuren dat traditiegetrouw door de Nederlandse ambassadeur wordt geopend of afgesloten waarna de duizenden deelnemers aan de demonstratie hun fiets in de hoogte hielden.... Iedereen was zeer onder de indruk van dit gebeuren. 's Avonds was een soort van afsluitend etentje en zondagmorgen kon iedereen nog even genieten van de stad (of bijslapen) alvorens weer terug te keren naar Nederland.
Julius maakte veel mee van dit festival en zag hoe actief de Ambassade, met name de Culturele attaché en zijn staff, betrokken was bij het promoten van de Nederlandse stripkunst, hierbij bijgestaan door de bevlogen strip promotor Gert Jan Pos. Ze kunnen terugzien op een vermoeiend maar zeer geslaagd georganiseerd evenement!

Opening Joost Swarte tentoonstelling in Budapest
Onder grote belangstelling van zowel Nederlandse als Hongaarse bezoekers werd vrijdagavond 29 april de tentoonstelling geopend van het werk van Joost Swarte. De tentoonstelling, die nog tot 20 mei duurt, legt de nadruk op het typografische aspect van het werk van deze zeer bijzondere kunstenaar. De tentoonstelling is ontworpen door Jan Kees Schelvis, die betrokken is bij het Grafisch Museum in Groningen. Op een aantal schragen die aan de onderkant genummerd zijn wordt het werk getoond waarbij op de muren van de expositieruimte een uitleg wordt gegeven in het Nederlands en Hongaars. Een zeer mooie tentoonstelling die mede tot stand is gekomen door de Nederlandse ambassade en Gert Jan Pos, strip promotor. De opening vond plaats door Leo Linscheer, de Culturele attaché van de ambassade in Budapest.(opening door de Culturele attaché terwijl Joost Swarte en Jan Kees Schelvis op de achtergrond de toespraak volgen)
Tijdens de opening werd ook het resultaat getoond van een workshop eerder die dag: een comic met strips over Elvis Presley: Elvis Budapest. Deze uitgave is voorzien van een omslag van Joost Swarte.

Tüszraktér op 1 juni dicht
Tüszraktér - hét broeinest van (alternatieve) culturele ontwikkelingen in Budapest, sluit, zoals het er nu naar uit ziet, op 1 juni haar deuren. De aangekondigde huurverhoging kon het management achter deze plek niet opbrengen. Helaas bracht de grote en kleurrijke demonstratie op 25 maart jongstleden (zie foto) niet het gehoopte resultaat: terugdraaien van de huurverhoging. Mogelijk dat ook andere aspecten een rol hebben gespeeld, maar het is doodzonde dat deze locatie, die in de zomermaanden een kleine kert had met vele optredens haar deuren moet sluiten. Alhoewel de organisatie liet weten door te vechten, lijkt de kans op redding op dit moment zeer klein.Hopelijk zal er de komende weken toch nog een oplossing komen want juist dit soort locaties zorgen ervoor dat creatief, artistiek talent zich in Budapest kan ontplooien.

Zomer in aantocht - kerts gaan open!
Met het stijgen van de temperatuur in Budapest gaan ook de kerts weer open. Oorspronkelijk (tuin-)terrassen achter alternatieve bars in het 7e district waarbij Szimpla en Mumus zo'n beetje de basis waren. Imiddels meer en meer commercieel, al is het bij iedere kert weer de vraag of hij in een nieuw seizoen weer opengaat. De omwonenden zijn er niet echt blij mee, met name vanwege de geluidsoverlast.Julius zal in 2011 een zo compleet mogelijk overzicht gaan geven van de kerts in Budapest, met name in het 7e district. Hier is de grootste groepering van kerts met, zoals het er nu naar uitziet, alleen al 5 kerts in de Kazinczy utca.
Buiten wat drinken kunt u in een aantal kerts ook eten of op zijn minst kleine hapjes krijgen. Daarnaast hebben vele kerts regelmatig ive optredens of draait een DJ muziek. In de meeste kerts kunt u daarnaast gebruik maken van gratis WiFi, dus als u onder het genot van een glas even wil werken... u heeft een goed excuus!

Nieuwe rondleiding - Graffiti kunst in Budapest
Aan de reeks rondleidingen die Julius in Budapest geeft is een nieuwe toegevoegd: het bezoeken van een aantal locaties in Budapest waar kunstzinnige graffiti te vinden is. Een letterlijk én figuurlijk bijzondere rondleiding want deze vorm van kunst is zeer aan veranderingen onderhevig en is vaak op plekken te vinden die je als toerist zeker niet ziet en die niet altijd even gemakkelijk toegangbaar zijn.Julius neemt u mee op basis van de meest recente informatie die hij heeft langs een aantal locaties met mooie kunst. Király utca 25 - een grauwe muur wordt omgetoverd in een kunstwerk
14 april 2011: lopend, zoals bijna dagelijks, op de Király utca, valt ineens op dat een grote grauwe kale muur bij de kleine speeltuin op nr. 25 een gedaanteverwisseling krijgt. Er wordt een lucht op geschilderd en onderaan wordt de muur groen geverfd.De dagen daarna werden de veranderingen op de foto gezet. Zo verscheen er een bomenrij aan de horizon, kreeg een prachtige boom op de voorgrond gestalte en verschenen er luchtballonnen aan de hemel.
Het ontwerp is van het bedrijf Suppre Neopaint dat op meer plaatsen in Budapest grauwe muren heeft opgevrolijkt en is gaandeweg het schilderwerk aangepast ten opzichte van het oorspronkelijke plan. Op het hek rond de speeltuin was namelijk een afbeelding te zien hoe het oorspronkelijk computerontwerp er uit zag.

Nederlandse striptekenaars in Budapest
De komende 2 weken wordt een waar feest voor de stripboeken liefhebbers die Budapest bezoeken (of de liefhebber die daar al woont). 4 tentoonstellingen gewijd aan 3 kunstenaars en een collectief openen de komende dagen de deuren en op 30 april is er een stripfestival met eveneens Nederlandse bijdragen.Allereerst het festival: op 30 april wordt in de Dürer Kert het 7e Hongaarse Stripfestival gehouden (Magyar Kepregény-Fesztivál) met daarbij ook Nederlandse bijdragen waaronder om 12.00 uur een lezing door Gert Jan Pos over Nederlandse stripkunst. Het festival in de Dürer Kert duurt van 10.00-18.00 uur. Entree: 500 HUF (kinderen beneden de 6 jaar hebben gratis toegang). Adres: XIV Ajtósi Dürer sor 19-21
Joost Swarte liefhebbers opgelet: De omslagtekening op het programmaboekje en het ontwerp van de poster voor het festival zijn van zijn hand. Lamelos
Dit kunstenaarscollectief is opgericht in 1997 door Aleks Deurloo, Jeroen Funke, Boris Peeters en Sam Peeters. Dit collectief, dat ook op parties grote populariteit geniet, is het creatieve brein achter de strip Kaasheld & Poephoofd. Een zeer bijzonder stripduo waarvan "Help"de laatst verschenen titel is. In Budapest wordt hun werk tentoongesteld vanaf 4 april tot en met 2 mei in de kArton gallerie. De tentoonstelling toont een doorsnede van hun werk waarbij alle technieken aan bod komen. Vanaf 20 april in de avond tot en met 4 mei wordt in de Kossuth Klub een tentoonstelling gehouden van de in 1966 geboren kunstenaar Marcel Ruijters. In deze tentoonstelling is werk te zien van de boeken Inferno (het eerste boek van La Divinia Commedia van Dante)) en 1348. Vooral de afbeeldingen van deze laatste titel zijn bijzonder omdat het boek nog niet is uitgegeven. Adres: Kossuth Klub - VIII. Müzeum utca 7.Typex
Vanaf 20 april in de avond tot en met 7 mei is in Roham werk te zien van Typex van wie Nick Cave zegt dat het een van de grootste Nederlandse kunstenaars is sinds Rembrandt. het meeste wat hij in opdracht maakt heeft te maken met muziek en film. Daarnaast is hij uitgever van het tijdschrift Chorizo en is een serie gestart over de legendarische voetbal stripheld Kick Wilstra. Dé tentoonstelling waar Julius het meest naar uitkijkt, en al jaren een favoriet kunstenaar van hem. Vanaf 29 april in de avond tot en met 20 mei wordt in Loffice een tentoonstelling gehouden over het werk van deze bijzondere kunstenaar, bekend van de Klare lijn, cd en lp hoezen van onder andere Fay Lovsky, posters voor festivals en vele tientallen zeer bijzondere bibliofiele uitgaven. De nadruk van de tentoonstelling in Loffice ligt op het grafische en typografische design van Joost Swarte. De tentoongestelde boeken zijn slechts bedoeld om inzicht te geven hoe Swarte de technieken gebruikt bij de totstandkoming van deze boeken. Rondleidingen tot nader bericht mogelijk
Door onverwachte omstandigheden verblijft Julius de komende tijd continue in Budapest. Dit geeft u als bezoeker van Budapest de gelegenheid met Julius op stap te gaan door de stad... Ga eens mee met een wandeling langs Art Nouveau gebouwen in het 10e district, ga eens mee naar een Joodse begraafplaats, zie eens andere synagoges (buiten) dan de synagoges in de Joodse wijk. Veel is mogelijk, dus als u Budapest wilt zien door iemand die de stad zeer goed kent door honderden uren te zwerven, boek dan een exclusieve rondleiding. Ook gewoon een wandeling door het centrum, waarbij ik u wijs op bijzondere details op gebouwen kan....
Spoorweghistorie in Budapest
Het rondzwerven dat Julius door heel Budapest doet, brengt iedere dag weer vele verrassingen Zaken die vaak te vinden zijn in de uithoeken van de stad die je alleen ontdekt door letterlijk straat in straat uit te lopen.Op 31 maart 2011 ontdekte Julius dit voormalige draaiplateau voor locomotieven dat ondanks de ouderdom bewaard is gebleven. Rondzwerven op Salgótárjani
Op een mooie warme ochtend in maart was Julius weer eens in staat rond te zwerven op de voor publiek gesloten Joodse begraafplaats Salgótárjani. Een begraafplaats die sinds 1961 buiten gebruik is en sindsdien te prooi is gevallen aan de tand des tijds en plunderingen.Met op de achtergrond enkel het geluid van een voorbijrijdende tram, een hakkende specht en af toe de waakhonden, maakte Julius een serie foto's van de nagenoeg allemaal zwaar vervallen grafmonumenten die deels zijn ontworpen door beroemde architecten als Bela Lajta, Emil Vidor en Alpar Ignac. WAMP designbeurs 20 maart 2011
Op 20 maart werd in het Millenáris gebouw vlak achter Metro 2 station Moskva tér voorlopig de laatste binnenbeurs gehouden van WAMP de, nagenoeg, maandelijkse designbeurs van Budapest. De komende maanden wijkt de beurs uit naar het Erzesbét tér vlak bij de Gödör Klub.Op de beurs tonen merendeels jonge ontwerpers hun creaties op het gebied van mode, sieraden, woningdesign zoals lampen en andere zaken. Ook is er een bescheiden afdeling met lokale producten zoals kaas. WAMP trekt altijd enorm veel ouders met kids voor wie het een favoriet uitje is op de zondag. Julius maakte op deze beurs een serie foto's die u te zien krijgt door op de bovenstaande foto te klikken.

Graffiti reportages: warmmakertjes
In maart 2011 zwerft Julius weer door Budapest. Vaak gewoon een tram of ander vervoermiddel pakkend en dan gaan lopen en kijken. Waar hij uitkomt en wat hij ziet ... het is altijd een verrassing.Dit heeft ook tot gevolg dat Julius op vele plekken in Budapest graffiti tegenkomst. Van een officiële toegelaten plek bij een HEV-lijn of in een kroeg tot illegale graffiti, bij stations, bruggen etc. De kunstenaars kiezen meestal plekken uit die hun kunstwerken goed zichtbaar maken.
Vooruitlopend op de fotoreportages die Julius maakte en die u in maart en volgende maanden op Szia kunt zien, krijgt u, door op de foto te klikken, alvast een voorproefje van wat u de komende tijd kunt verwachten.

Graffiti in de kroeg Tündérgyár
Op weg naar de controle van de toestand van een serie graffiti die Julius vorig jaar maakte in het 9e district van Budapest (en die helaas gedeeltelijk is verdwenen), kwam Julius medio maart langs de kroeg Tündérgyár die vlak naast het Trafó theater ligt.Daar was de kunstenares Vera Bravo bezig met het opzetten van de schilderingen bij de ingang van de kroeg. Deze zouden 18 maart klaar zijn en ze maakte me attent op de schilderingen op de toiletten. En, zeker de schilderingen op de damestoiletten zijn zeer leuk.

Armoede in Budapest
Als u als toerist Budapest bezoekt, zult u ongetwijfeld met bedelaars worden geconfronteerd. Budapest kent vele, te veel personen die buiten de boot vallen en dit zijn lang niet allemaal dronkelappen of andere verslaafden. Vaak gaat het om mensen die door een minder sociaal systeem buiten de boot zijn gevallen en u treft ze aan van jonge alleenstaande moeders met kinderen tot en met oudjes die (hoog-)bejaard zijn.Tot een aantal maanden geleden sliepen veel van deze zwervers in de metro onderdoorgangen, het is daar nu eenmaal lekker droog en relatief warm. Het gemeentebestuur van Budapest vindt dit geen goed beeld voor de toerist die Budapest bezoekt en is begonnen met het verwijderen van deze mensen. Om de schijn te wekken dat er nu genoeg zorg is om deze mensen op te vangen, hangen in de onderdoorgangen posters met adressen van noodslaapplaatsen, dagverblijven en adressen van een soort voedselbanken. Het ziet er allemaal mooi uit, maar de werkelijkheid is helaas anders. Een groot deel van deze mensen slaapt inmiddels elders, buiten het zicht van de meeste toeristen.
Zwerf je, zoals Julius, door de hele stad inclusief de buitenwijken dan zie je tentenkampjes, kuilen in de grond afgedekt met zeil, krakkemikke houten optrekjes in bossages waarbij men hout uit de omgeving gebruikt om te koken of de boel te verwarmen. Ook panden die in Nederland direct als onbewoonbaar zouden worden verklaard, herbergen vele mensen die het niet breed hebben. Of, zoals op bovenstaande foto, slapen de mensen in een tunnel van een spoorlijn. Toen Julius op 19 maart 2011 deze foto maakte (in verband met afbeeldingen van graffiti op deze locatie), waren de meeste zwervers op pad om eten en drank te verzamelen. Toch lag er in deze puinhoop minimaal 1 persoon te slapen. Hoewel Budapest in het centrum een relatief schone stad is, is de vervuiling rond deze plaatsen van een gigantische omvang. Dat is het andere Budapest en het probleem wordt eerder groter dan kleiner.

Demonstratie tegen de Mediawet op 15 maart
15 maart 2011: de nationale feestdag in Hongarije en een uitgelezen dag voor de organisatie van een demonstratie tegen de omstreden Mediawet die de vrijheid van pers in Hongarije in gevaar brengt. Hoewel er door de regering Orban wel wat versoepelingen zijn aangekondigd, gaan die nog niet ver genoeg om de vrijheid van pers te garanderen. Dorotteya van Amnesty, die de bijeenkomst mede organiseerde, vertelde Julius dat volgens de politie er zo'n 17.000 demonstranten waren geweest (waaronder Julius). Het was een indrukwekkende bijeenkomst die hopelijk zal leiden tot aanpassingen van de wet. Theatervoorstelling Utópia op 16 en 17 maart
Op 16 en 17 maart 2011 wordt in de theaterzaal van Sirály, VI. Király utca 50, wederom de theatervoorstelling Utópia onder leiding van Júlia Bársony gehouden, dit keer in samenwerking met Trafó, hét theater in Budapest voor modern theater, dans etc. De voorstelling is in Sirály te volgen en interactief ook in Trafó. De theatershow begint 0m 20.00 uur, maar u kunt elk moment binnenlopen, uiteraad na een kaartje te hebben gekocht en het is rond 22.00 uur afgelopen.Julius was zeer enthousiast over de voorstelling die hij in januari zag en als u in Budapest bent.... bezoek deze unieke theatershow. Weer in Budapest
Sinds 9 maart doolt Julius wederom door Budapest. En, de hoeveelheid indrukken de afgelopen dagen opgedaan ziullen tot vele aanpassingen en uitbreidingen van de website Szia gaan leiden. Zo zijn van een aantal architecten die Julius al beschreven heeft "nieuwe" panden op de foto gezet. Er zijn nieuwe kroegen ontdekt en een paar al uitgetest, de Bauhaus rondleiding is wat uitgebreid en aangepast etc. etc. De komende dagen kunt u dus vele nieuwe updates verwachten op deze website.Julius Palacinka, 12 maart 2011
Nieuwe aflevering in serie 'Gebouw van de maand'
Al bijna een traditie: rond de 15e van iedere maand kunt u op Szia een nieuwe aflevering verwachten in de serie 'Gebouw van de maand'. Deze maand is dat de Krisztus Király templom in Buda, die in de buurt van de Nederlandse ambassade te vinden is. Het is een schitterende Katholieke kerk die in de periode 1924-1926 is gebouwd naar het ontwerp van de architect Aladár Árkay (1868-1932). Van buiten robuust, al een beetje de overgang die de architect maakte naar ontwerpen in de Bauhaus/Nieuwe Zakelijkheid architectuur. Van binnen prachtig gerestaureerd en zeer kleurrijk met zowel Art Deco als Wiener Werkstatte invloeden. Een interieur waarnaar je blijft kijken! Uitbreiding van het aantal rondleidingen
Het rondleidingprogramma voor 2011 is sinds 4 februari op Szia te vinden. Nieuw zijn onder andere diverse rondleidingen over Bauhaus en Nieuwe Zakelijkheid architectuur en rondleidingen door wijken in Budapest. De laatste nieuwe toevoeging betreft thema rondleidingen, waarbij u uw wensen aan Julius kunt voorleggen en die vervolgens bekijkt of hij uw verzoek kan vertalen in een schitterende rondleiding.Net zoals in 2010 worden rondleidingen niet gegeven op vaste tijdstippen maar enkel op verzoek van een klant en, natuurlijk, als Julius in Budapest is. Julius is van mening dat u meer opsteekt van een persoonlijke, kleinschalige, rondleiding dan met 30 mensen in een bus. Voor wat betreft de eerste helft van 2011 zijn rondleidingen mogelijk in de periode van 10 maart tot en met 4 april en van ca. 10 mei tot 1 juni. Daarna zijn er rondleidingen mogelijk in juli en in ieder geval van half augustus tot half september.

Hongarije Vandaag: filmpje over protest tegen mediawet
Vandaag, 3 februari 2011, is op Hongarije Vandaag een filmpje verschenen naar aanleiding van de grote demonstratie in Budapest op 27 januari over de protesten tegen de nieuwe mediawet die ook voor websites als Hongarije Vandaag grote gevolgen kan hebben. Immers, een onafhankelijke, objectieve berichtgeving wordt onmogelijk als er van overheidswege wordt bepaald wat er geschreven mag worden.Zoals Hongarije Vandaag eerder berichtte over een passage in de omstreden mediawet: "De inhoud van media mag niet, expliciet of impliciet, personen, naties, gemeenschappen, nationale, etnische, taalkundige en andere minderheden of enige meerderheid [!], noch enige kerk of religieuze groep beledigen of discrimineren," aldus artikel 17, lid 2 van de media grondwet. In lid 1 van datzelfde artikel wordt ook haat zaaien tegen dezelfde groepen verboden. Wie zich daaraan niet houdt, kan een boete opgelegd krijgen door de media-autoriteit."
Hoewel er nu enige bereidheid van de Hongaarse regering schijnt te zijn om de wet (deels) aan te passen, is dat nog niet zeker, alhoewel Neelie Kroes, Europees Commissaris voor Digitale Media, er bovenop zit.

Bauhaus en Nieuwe Zakelijkheid architecten
Vanaf 3 februari is Szia een nieuw hoofdstuk rijker: pagina's over de architecten die in de jaren '30 en '40 met name Bauhaus en Nieuwe Zakelijkheid panden in Budapest hebben neergezet. Een begin van iets dat in 2011/2012 moet uitgroeien tot hét overzicht op Internet op dit gebied. Het is pionieren omdat er van het leeuwendeel van de architecten amper of geen informatie op internet te vinden is. Waar kan zullen naast foto's ook biografische gegevens, lijst van gebouwen in Budapest en de indrukken van Julius worden vermeld. Voor veel namen zal het in eerste instantie bij foto's van de door hun ontworpen panden blijven. En, dit onderdeel wordt geleidelijk aan opgebouwd vanwege de enorme hoeveelheid werk die er ligt, dus verwacht er nog niet teveel van!Julius Palacinka, 3 februari 2011
Nieuwe graffiti fotoreportages
Graffiti kunst is sinds oktober 2010 een vast onderdeel op Szia. Niet de vernielzucht van het bekladden van monumentale deuren, panden etc., want dat is puur vandalisme. Maar wel mooie kunstuitingen op plekken waar dat kan, zoals op schuttingen of muren langs een spoorlijn.Julius heeft inmiddels op een 12-tal locaties fotoreportages van schitterende graffiti kunst gemaakt. Deze reportages zijn vanaf 27 januari op Szia te bekijken. In een later stadium zal er ook een pagina komen met individuele graffiti kunst in Budapest.

Utópia, theatervoorstelling van Júlia Bársony: filmpje op Youtube
Van de theatervoorstelling Utópia, die op 5 januari 2011 in premiere ging in de theaterzaal van Sirály, is op Youtube een filmpje verschenen. Boeiend, beetje mysterieus, met een Engelstalige uitleg onder het bijna 6 minuten durende filmpje. Door hier te klikken krijgt u het te zien.Op Youtube staan daarnaast sinds kort een paar andere filmpjes van de Harmadik Hang Háza (de theater company van Júlia Bársony), onder andere van een uitvoering van de theatervoorstelling Végtelen die Julius in 2010 zag.

Julius in maart in Budapest
Vanaf 9 maart tot 5 april is Julius gelukkig weer in Budapest. Uiteraard zal het voorjaarsfestival worden bezocht en daarvan kunt u eind maart een artikel op de website vinden.Verder wordt het verder zwerven door de stad, foto's maken, onderzoek doen zodat de website verder verbetert en uitgebreid kan worden. Zo zal tijdens deze periode meer infomatie worden gezocht over de architecten die in de jaren '30 en '40 Bauhaus/Nieuwe Zakelijkheid gebouwen in Budapest hebben neergezet. Qua foto's heeft Julius inmiddels honderden voorbeelden, maar met name aan biografische gegevens ontbreekt het.
En, natuurlijk hoop Julius bezoekers van Budapest via een van de rondleidingen die hij heeft uitgezet, kennis te laten maken met het andere Budapest dat oh zo mooi en interressant is! Szia weer online
Vanaf 19 januari is Szia bijna 24 uur uit de lucht geweest. De reden was een door Julius over het hoofd geziene nota van 57.00 euro van Mijndomein, de de website host. De service van dit bedrijf was wederom, zoals in het verleden meermaals meegemaakt, bedroevend slecht en niet klantgericht. Toen er om uitleg werd gevraagd werd verteld dat het hun niet uitmaakte hoe hoog de openstaande nota was en of het een belangrijke of minder belangrijke website betrof....In 2010 is het een paar keer voorgekomen dat de blogberichten2011_enfile van Szia was gehackt en er bestanden aan de website waren toegevoegd. Dit terwijl de computer van Julius offline (en beveiligd) was en het wachtwoord alleen in zijn hoofd zit. Ook toen bleek de servicegerichtheid van Mijndomein door de schuld bij de klant te leggen, want die zou wel slordig zijn omgesprongen met zijn wachtwoord. Julius zal derhalve op korte termijn de website bij een meer betrouwbaar en servicegericht bedrijf onderbrengen. Mijn excuus dat u tijdelijk niet van de informatie op deze site gebruik kon maken!

Eerste artikel over Bauhaus in Budapest in concept klaar
Niet alleen tijdens de Art Nouveau periode kende Budapest een enorme uitbreiding van het aantal gebouwen. De periode van ca. 1928 tot 1948 was eveneens een periode waarin zeer vele gebouwen werden gerealiseerd. Het grootste deel van deze gebouwen valt onder de categorie Bauhaus / Nieuwe Zakelijkheid. Zowel in de stadscentra van Pest en Buda als in de heuvels van Buda zijn vele prachtige voorbeelden te zien van deze architectuurstroming. Maar, ook elders in de stad zijn bijzondere gebouwen uit deze periode te vinden. In 2011 werkt Julius aan pagina's hierover. Szia wederom op Hongarije Vandaag
De samenwerking tussen Szia en de nieuwssite Hongarije Vandaag heeft wederom geleid tot publicatie van een pagina, ditmaal 'Gebouw van de maand'. In deze rubriek zet Julius maandelijks een bijzonder gebouw in Budapest in het zonnetje. Dit aan de hand van meer of minder tekst en foto's. Vaak betreft het details die u in eerste instantie misschien niet op zullen vallen, óf gebouwen die wat buiten het gangbare toeristencentrum liggen. 'Gebouw van de maand' bestaat op Szia sinds oktober 2010 en u kunt iedere maand rond de 15e een nieuwe bijdrage verwachten. In de aflevering van januari 2011 wordt aandacht besteed aan een bijzonder kantoorgebouw op de VIII. Fiumei út 19. Arkád bazár ... restauratie vordert
Één van de meest bijzondere gebouwen in het VII. de district van
Budapest is
zonder meer de voormalige speelgoedwinkel Arkád bazár en lakóház
(appartementencomplex),
gebouwd in 1908-1909 aan de VII. Dohány utca 22-24 [hoek Sip utca]. Een
creatie van de broers Jozséf (1877-1947) en László (1875-1933) Vágó. De
Zsolnay gevelversiering die (deels) nog aanwezig is, is van grote
schoonheid. Nadat het tijdperk van de speelgoedwinkel voorbij was,
heeft er nog een tijd de Métro Klub in gezeten. Al ruim 1.5 jaar is men bezig het pand weer in min of meer oude luister te herstellen, waar kan in orginele staat. De plannen om er een café in te vestigen zijn niet doorgegaan. Het woongedeelte bevat nog vele originele details, het winkelgedeelte voor zover bekend niet meer. De restauratie begon met het verwijderen van de beplating die was aangebracht toen het gebouw als Club ging dienen en waarna een gedeelte van de Zsolnay versiering weer naar voren kwam. Ook werd de gevelpui verwijderd en begon men intern met het nodige hak- en breekwerk.
Nu, januari 2011, is het gebouw weer voorzien van een gevelpui, helaas niet naar het origineel, maar van kunststof en is men begonnen met andere herstelwerkzaamheden aan de gevel. Recent is de rand verwijderd die de scheiding was tussen de beplating van de Métro klub en de bovenzijde van de decoratie. Deze komt nu veel beter tot zijn recht. Inmiddels is men ook begonnen met de pilaren weer in oude luister te herstellen. Al moeten hierbij wel vraagtekens worden gezet of dat volgens het originele ontwerp gaat gebeuren, dus met Zsolnay versieringen, of dat het gladde afgewerkte zuilen zullen worden. Toen Julius vandaag langs het gebouw liep was men net begonnen met de herstelwerkzaamheden aan de zuilen. In maart zal Julius de toestand dan in beeld brengen. Maar, vergeleken met een jaar geleden, is het pand er al enorm op vooruit gegaan.

Nieuwe
theatervoorstelling Júlia Bársony: Utópia
Van 5 tot en met 9 januari wordt in de theaterzaal van Sirály de nieuwe
theatervoorstelling onder leiding van Júlia Bársony
gehouden: Utópia. De voorstelling gaat over het leven in
imaginaire
wijken in Budapest in 2011. Het is een voorstelling die tot stand is gekomen door de"3rd Voice Company and the visual communications students of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME)"
Julius zag de voorstelling op 5 januari en was zeer onder de indruk. In de theaterzaal van Sirály was een grote tafel gemaakt in de vorm van de plattegrond van de stad Budapest, met daarin de Donau en binnen dit kader waren tal van acteurs en actrices actief, ieder met een eigen performance.

Interactief theater, waar je ademloos naar kan kijken of aan deel kan nemen door bijvoorbeeld via sluizen contact te zoeken met de mysterieuze figuur in de tent (links op de onderstaande foto). Er waren videobeelden, een volwassen marionet en tal van andere interessante performances. Daarnaast speelde ook de muziek c.q. geluiden een grote rol bij het scheppen van een uniek theateravondje. In eerste instantie denk je.. is dit alles .... maar dan wordt je gegrepen door wat er allemaal te zien is en het spel, en blijf je kijken.
De voorstelling begint 's avonds om 20.00 uur en eindigt om 22.00 uur. Na een kaartje te hebben gekocht kunt u op ieder moment binnenlopen en gaan kijken. En, het boeit, zowel door de interactie met de acteurs als het kijken hoe anderen uit het publiek deze voorstelling beleven. En, door het kijken, rondlopen, zitten, nadenken ontstaat er ook een rust. Na de voorstelling Végtelen, eveneens van de hand van Júlia Bársony, die Julius in maart 2010 zag én eerdere voorstellingen van haar, is het advies... bent u in Budapest en kunt een voorstelling bijwonen... gaan!!
De Blog Harmadik Hang Háza van Júlia, die onder andere over deze nieuwe productie gaat, is hier te vinden. Sinds 28 december 2010 bevat de Blog een Engelstalige toelichting op deze unieke, theatervoorstelling.
Als u in Budapest bent en interesse heeft in modern theater.... een niet te missen voorstelling! En, er zijn per avond slechts een beperkt aantal tickets te verkrijgen, dus reserveren is aan te raden.

Winters
Budapest
Voor een bliksembezoek van een paar dagen
is Julius weer in Budapest.
En winters Budapest is mooi maar brengt ook wat problemen met zich mee.
Zo hebben trams duidelijk wat moeite met rijden, is er wat smog en is
het her en der wat glad. De reden van het bliksembezoek is onder andere
de hierboven genoemde voorstelling en het maken van foto's van gebouwen
die in de lente en zomer schuil gaan achter bomen. Ook wordt de laatste hand gelegd aan de pagina over het gebouw van de maand januari 2010. Deze pagina zal 15 januari online zijn. En wederom is het een zeer bijzonder gebouw dat u 'moet' zien als u in Budapest bent. De rubriek "Gebouw van de maand" is inmiddels uitgebreid met een kaartje waarop de beschreven locaties te vinden zijn en ook worden de GPS coördinaten nu vermeld...
Indien de tijd en het weer het toelaat zullen er ook nog nieuwe foto's worden gemaakt op de Salgotarjáni begraafplaats, een update van de fotopagina over deze begraafplaats zal dan eind januari op Szia te vinden zijn. En voor de rest ziet Julius wel wat op zijn pad komt, Budapest is iedere keer weer verfrissend en vernieuwend en verveelt geen moment.
