Introduction
Budapest is a breeding ground for young artists, (fashion) designers and small, quirky shops are still growing. This page was originally only published in Dutch, because an good overview in Dutch lacked and Julius has provided in that gap.Visiting WAMP ... highly recommended by Julius! This is an association of (often young) Hungarian designers whom design clothes, fashion jewelry, bags, interior objects and much more. Almost monthly a fair be held where the designers present themselves. And in connection with the holidays there are additional fairs in December. Many of these designers have their own website. Some even have a shop in the city where you can buy really nice original gifts, clothing / fashion, accessories and like.
WAMP, at least the show, is more aimed at parents with children, and you will encounter them in a majority when you visit WAMP. But the designers don't focus only on them, it's for them an excellent platform where they are able to show their designs and get more publicity. The many business cards collected on the fairs, along with walks in the city, has led to a still growing list of designers, artists and / or creative minds and shops. On this page an overview of what you can find about this subject on Szia Budapest.
WAMP: what is it and on which dates are the markets
WAMP is an umbrella organization which, as they write on their own excellent English website:The main objective of WAMP has always been to support Hungarian fashion and design as well as to enhance visual culture of its audience while promoting hungarian design products. It furthers intends to promote dialogue between the public and designers, designers and companies and designers and designers.
The website provides an overview of types of design and designers and their affiliated designers and artists. There is also an election of the Designer of the Month. As already noted: the fairs / markets are a paradise for parents with children and it is good to know that not every member participates in the fair. In Julius' opinion the fairs held in the former Gödör Klub or Millenáris are more cozy than the outdoor fairs.
Julius has made photographs on two WAMP fairs of stands and exhibitors: Christmas 2010, which was held on three Sundays in December and on the fair of March 2011.
In 2012, all indoor fairs are held in the Millenáris (near Metro 2 station Széll Kálmán tér) and the outdoor fairs on Erzsébet tér (near Deák tér)
The WAMP dates for 2012 are:
November 18 - Millenáris, B csarnok
December 9 - Millenáris, B csarnok
December 16 - Millenáris, B csarnok
December 23 - Millenáris, B csarnok
Vasárnapiac (Gouba Gozsdu Sunday market)
Under the name Vasárnapiac, this company organises (almost) every Sunday from April 15 to October 14, 2012 between 10.00 and 19.00 hours a fair in which several (young) designers on participate. Some are also represented on the WAMP fairs. But it is not only design. Antiques, second hand books, stalls with special food products, information about Jewish Budapest and much more. Live music and many drink and eat stalls ensure that you can relax. The place where the market is held, is the Gozsdu Udvar. This is the beautifully restored block of shops and apartments between the Király utca and Dob utca in the Jewish Quarter [VII. district]. The website of the organization, in English, provides information about the market, the participating designers and so on.
Designers
The list of (young) designers and quirky shops in Budapest is still growing. And the fun, unique designs often show the creativity which is to find in the city. Meanwhile, dozens of addresses of shops are collected and mapped, and the first results are to find on this page, which still will be extended.Design Hét (Budapest Design Week)
In 2011 the 8th edition of Design Hét (Budapest Design Week) was held from September 30 to October 9. A very busy event, nearly 60.00 visitors. See this page for the events which Julius recommended in 2011. During this festival, almost 200 participants show their design, there are workshops, lectures, fashion shows and so on. The 2012 edition was held at the end of September till Ocotober 10.Overviews, news websites and Blogs
